Vox pauses/stutters
« on: January 05, 2010, 10:35:18 AM »
I have had this problem before an it was an IRQ conflict with my sound cad and video card. I am using a Sound Blaster X-FI titanium pro and a EVGA GTX 295 CO-OP. I have tried moving the devices around to try to change the IRQ but it will not work. Is there a way to change the IRQ in the bios, I'm using a EVGA X58 board. Both the sound card and video card are on IRQ 16. I will post a DXDIAG report when I get home.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just to clarify the stutter happens when I release the F12 key and the T key to transmit

That is not good.  Having the video and sound card on the same IRQ is going to have some really negative effects on many things in the computer.

Creative hardware has never liked sharing an IRQ with any other device.  It has always lead to problems.

I still think there is a way to change the IRQ settings in the BIOS

EVGA X58 SLI Board

Any input welcome

I'm not sure about that particular board but older boards had the option to manually set irq's. The downside is that IIRC you had to _install XP_ without automatic irq handling (ACPI) in order for this to work and then you had to manually configure all irq's in bios by disabling acpi mode also there.

Every motherboard I've ever worked with has had all non-legacy (i.e newer than ISA/AT) IRQ sharing designated by "assignment".  That is, each of the slots and embedded devices (such as USB,Ethernet, Onboard Sound, Drive controllers, etc.) are assigned an IRQ "assignment", and at most in BIOS you can manually assign specific IRQ's to each assignment - but each device that's assigned the same is going to end up on the SAME IRQ when you are done.   Check your manual, while many do not, some will give you a description of how IRQ sharing is set up.

Also, check your BIOS, and see if you have a section similiar to the following, where you can set each "assignment" to a specific IRQ, so that you can ensure that 2 or more assignments are not being designated automatically to use the same IRQ.

PCI Configuration
PCI Slot 1 IRQ Priority [Auto]
PCI Slot 2 IRQ Priority
PCI Slot 3 IRQ Priority
PCI Slot 4 IRQ Priority
PCI Slot 5 IRQ Priority

I know of no PCI/PCI-X motherboard that allows you to set IRQ's per device - you can assign to slots, and excluding simple onboard "ISA-type" devices like serial/parallel ports, each onboard device is set up to share the IRQ with a specific slot.

In short, excluding instances where someone has manually assigned the same IRQ to multiple bios "assignments", in my experience if 2 onboard devices share an IRQ, they will always share an IRQ - and if 2 slots share an IRQ, they will always do so, and if an onboard device and a slot share an IRQ, they will always do so.

So check out the above, but be prepared to move the card(s) to different slots.

Some older boards that I had used to have a map which showed the internal irq assignments and which slot shared irq with which resource. They probably don't include this anymore since acpi is supposed to work fine.

Is your hardware acceleration reduced to 3/4?

Run Dxdia, under the sound tab reduce the hardware accelerator to 3/4.

Please please, hold the applause. :D

It is set to 3/4. I have had this issue with another board and I moved the sound card around and finally got the sound card and the video card on different IRQ.

I know what the problem is just not sure how to fix it.

In the motherboard manual it has INT Pin assignments and IRQ assignments. The IRQ assignments have two choices PCI Device and Reserved. This is in the PnP/PCI Config Menu.

Not sure what pin assignment are.

Any help?

"Int Pin" is apparently another way to refer to the IRQ assignments - in the past I've always seen them refered to by letter. You generally see A,B,C & D for older chipsets that only had 4 assignment "slots" - while I see that the X58 chipset apparently has 8. I downloaded your motherboard manual by the way, and it sucks, because what you are looking for is information like this:

Which outlines for my motherboard what devices (onboard as well as the PCI/PCIe-X bus slots) share IRQs.  Without it, you are pretty much guessing - because you'd have to ferret out that (in the case of my motherboard for example) PCI slot 2, PCIe x1_1, and one of the two onboard lan adapters are on the same IRQ assignment.  No matter what you do, they are ALWAYS going to share.  And so are the PCIe-x16_1 and 2, and PCI slot 1.  If I put a sound card in slot 1, and it's ALWAYS on the same IRQ as the Nvidia card I put in regardless of which x16 slot I put it in - as is one of the USB controllers, an X1 slot, and the "Azalia".

In BIOS, all you get to do is change the actual IRQ assigned to the specific IRQ assignment slot.  Because what can also happen (I'm sure it's worse with 8 assignment slots) is that more than 1 slot assignment can be assigned the same IRQ by ACPI.  If (in the example shown) A and B ae BOTH assigned an IRQ of 3, then not only is the sound card going to conflict if it's installed in PCI slot 1, it's also going to conflict if it's installed in slot 2 - since both A and B (or in your BIOS, designated by Pin Assigment 1 and 2) are set to the same IRQ.

So on your own board, you first need to determine what the mapping is, and then install the cards appropriately, then ensure that those two "Pin Assignments" are manually set to different IRQ's - and if there is one, the option for Plug and Play OS disabled -  before you can ensure that they aren't stepping on each other.
See?

PS -one quick way to sometimes resolve these kinds of issues is to disable every device you can, to free up the IRQ that's reserved for it.  Don't have a Parallel printer?  Disable the port. Same for comm port.  Have a mouse that can be use either USB or via Mouse port?  Use it USB instead of via the PS-2 style mouse port connector (etc.)

Thanks for the info this will help.

I know the new BIOS for this board will disable some items automatically when not in use, such as the PS-2 connection

I will up date this and see what happens.

I have also asked some questions on the EVGA forums and will let you know of any responces.

Thank you
