202 vs 205
« on: April 22, 2000, 06:55:00 PM »
Power loading:

202: 6459 lbs/1100 hp = 5.87 lbs/hp
205: 7415 lbs/1475 hp = 5.03 lbs/hp

It makes sense that the 205 should outclimb the 202, given that the airframes are virtually identical.  I found some 205 data (William Green) that puts the 205 climb rate at 53 sec to 1000m, 2 min, 40s to 3000m and 7 min 6s to 7000m.  Compare that to the 202 numbers of 39s to 1000m and 2 min 28s to 3000m (same source).  Which one is right?  From my own analysis, the 205 should indeed outclimb the 202 by about 3 m/s at WEP power.  The 205 in AH matches up very well with these numbers, but the 202 does seem to lack a little bit in the climb (about 300 fpm).

202 vs 205

Hi Wells.
the only data available for the C.205V are the following:

climb to 5,000mt: 4'47"
climb to 6,000mt: 5'53"
climb to 7,000mt: 7'06"

and they match pretty well with our AcesHigh C.205V.

Now the first problem arises: which C.205V did they test? Well, IMHO they probably tested the first series of the "Veltro" (the 2x7,7mm + 2x12,7mm armed, that is). The AH "light armed" C.205V gets to 23,000ft (~7,000mt) in about 6'45" with 100% fuel & ammo and 160mph IAS climb speed. The heavy one (2x12,7mm + 2x20mm) needs about 7'20".

Another problem: do we have to use WEP during our tests? IMHO we should use WEP. The "Veltro"'s DB605A1 didnt have GM-1 nor MW50. The maximum rpm (climb and combat power, that is) time allowed was ~5' (like in AH, well done). From what I understand the AH WEP models that max allowed rpm, am I right?

As far as the C.202 is concerned I really dunno. Probably your right, maybe she lacks some ft/min climb rate but, above all max speed.

I gave a look to your tables. Can you translate m/s to ft/min? Would be someway easier to understand. And consider that 3,400kg is the t/o weight of the "heavy armed" C.205. My best estimate of the t/o weight of the "light" one is 3,280Kg.

P.S.: If you want two very good books about WWII italian stuff and operations, get:
COURAGE ALONE (Dunning), HIKOKI Pub., ISBN 1 902109 02 3 (for 1940-43 ops)
AIR WAR ITALY - 1944-45 (Beale, D'Amico, Valentini), Airlife Pub., ISBN 1 85310 252 0
