I use to try and fly for score, once you give it up and could care less about your rank you'll find the game much more enjoyable.

#1 tip for keeping a low score = quit your job, move back in with your mom and play 18 hours a day.

The most important advice anyone can give a new player is don't play for score or rank as score/rank are meaningless.

I know that you think by having a low rank will mean you're good at the game but all it really shows that you are good at gaming the game and that's it.  That little nugget you posted about scoring your fighter sorties under attack to keep your fighter rank low is just an example of how you can game the game and does not in anyway indicate your level of skill, in fact, it usually points to the opposite.

Do yourself a favor and start playing the game for the fun of it and don't worry about what your score or rank is, no one else cares.
