he survey suggests Generation Z are shaping up to be less self-centred and have more of a social conscience than the preceding Generation Y, who were dubbed the "me generation".

Based on the content of the article 'Generation Z' is considered to be those who are currently 12-20 I guess.... those using the internet at least.

The article is completely null and void though, since they used 'Habbo Hotel' as the testing pool :huh

Was I the only one who found this a poorly written article?  The author wanted to use the "lingo" so much that he/she used it in every other word, making it sound like this is the only way the younger generation communicates.  Real world issues were reduced to "props" or "fail".  That may have just been how the survey was released but if you just give the kids those two options, you aren't going to get an intellectual answer.

Maybe it was just an article about the language, but it seems like there were some inferences about the intelligence of the younger generation just because of these words.

Meh, maybe this post is ftl. Epic Fail

Yeah, Habbo Hotel is not a good indicator of the Generation Z. In my time at high school, I have never heard any mention their "Habbo." A better indicator of kids using the internet would be...Facebook really.

Look they're talking about New Zealand, which is a thousand miles from a place a thousands of miles from anywhere. Habbo hotel? Never shreckin' heard of it.

New Zealand has as many people as Ireland in terms of population and who the hell has ever of heard of Ireland as the arbiter of teenage angst or teenage opinion. In USA terms it's just a small state like Rhode Island or some city somewhere.

But I suppose we're all interconnnected. Here in Ireland far too many teenagers have faux American accents.  :huh

What can you do

Habbo Hotel isn't a social networking site as the article says, it's an obscure online game with no combat system (it's like an MMO Farmville I guess you could say). Another example would be Gaia Online.
They're both... ermmmm well at best they're poor representations of any generation.

ex

diss <- No
props <- No one says this
jks <- jk maybe... jks=jokes??? ehhh....
totes, rentals <- never heard anyone say this in my life
"zomg - Expression of amazement or shock at something even more amazing than omg (Oh My God). " <- zOMG is used sarcastically or ironically...
phail <- raged

I remember diss from years ago, props too.  I don't know many people that use those anymore. The rentals things, never heard of that, that one doesn't even make sense.

People still say 'dis' but the people who 'should' be saying it (i.e. lower class, inner city and rappers) don't 'play' Habbo Hotel. That's why the fact that it was not only listed there but #1 is pretty funny considering the source.

I can't remember the last time I've heard 'props' though, other than sarcastically...

At the risk of sounding old and out of touch, if any of the Gen Z'ers use that language on a resume they will quickly become known as the unemployed generation - LOL.
