Kill Bug in P47?
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:19:17 AM »
 :headscratch:

Twice last night I was flying along completely free of any observable threat and suddenly hear a single PING, quick hit sprite inside my cockpit and out goes my oil and the propeller immediately seizes.

The first time, I was goes past an airfield at about 1 thousand feet.  I just assumed it was a lucky shot from a field gun or auto ack.  It seemed an unlikely shot, but hey, stranger things have happened.

About an hour later, I was flying escort for a set of buffs.  There were two cons in the area, one of which was attacking the buffs, and the other was somewhat lower and of no threat.  Again, flying along, hear a single PING and same thing -- oil on the windscreen and the propeller immediately seized.  I assumed lucky shot again, but as I look around, there was no one even remotely close to have fired the shot.  The field was roughly 12K below and could not have hit me with auto ack or manned gun.  As I am not a big fan of coincidence, I logged off to watch the film and figure out where or how I was hit.

I have watched the film (repeatedly) from all perspectives.  I tried to watch from all views and from each individual plane recorded.  I absolutely cannot find where the 'miracle shot' came from.  So, this has me wondering if there is something about the P47m the 'breaks' under certain conditions, or maybe there is some type of damage bug for which I was a victim of circumstance.

I did cut an except of the film surrounding the point of damage; but, I have no idea how to post or attach it here.  If anyone can help either direct me how to post the film, or has any idea's as to the 'damage bug', I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks     :salute

It does seem odd anyway that one of the toughest planes with one of the toughest engines gets knocked out like that but even though I have had the same thing happen I usually know what caused it. I would love to see the film.

You can get a 4shared.com account for free and upload it there (fairly easy to do) and once uploaded the system there automatically popsup a link you can copy and paste into a message in the forums here so we can see it. You dont have to do that if you just want HTC to see it just attach it in an email and send it to them.

It could have been the manned or auto ack shooting! I've heard of people making almost impossible shots at high cons before. And if I'm not mistaken the film viewer won't show somebody in the manned ack! :salute

This will be first attempt at upload a film link, so here it goes......

http://www.4shared.com/file/192024088/78ee785c/Excerpt_Film4.html

I hope that worked.  The damage I was referring to in the previous post occurs in this excerpt at around 0:00:54.  I still cannot figure out where that shot or damage came from.  Anyone who can figure it out, I will certainly owe you a   and  :salute.

Thanks

That was actually me.  I bailed and hung on underneath your plane, then shot your engine with my 45.

While your comment is humorous, unfortunately there are those who would believe it and assume that the mystery is solved.  I was still hoping someone (SKUZZY included) who might be able to help me figure this out.  If it goes on too much longer I am going to have to call the Mystery Wagon.  I bet 'he' would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those darn meddling kids.

That's crazy, couldn't find a cause myself either :headscratch:  Maybe it threw a rod and part of the engine casing flew out of the left side of the engine, yea that's it :lol  Actually have no idea.
