Mirrors, are you sure you want them?
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:32:12 AM »
What is it with the fascination with mirrors?  I've read many opinions, and the consensus seems to be that you can't see crap in them, and that if you do see a bandit in a rear-view mirror it's too late.  Below are a couple pics from one of the newer Il-2 mods that provides mirrors for aircraft that had them.  Now, before you all call me a blasphemer, inspect the images and notice their value for demonstrating the worthlessness of rear view mirrors.  As an experiment, I tried to use the mirror against some AI 190s instead of turning my head diligently, and was shot down by a rear hemisphere 190 that I never saw (until my aircraft was blown to bits and I had the god's-eye view of the 190 flying through my wreckage).

This is the standard, 90 degree fov.  You can see the icon of the Spit (red is friendly) about 570 meters back.  The box in the lower left is some artifact of snapping a picture that has a mirror image in it, and isn't there in the game.

Here is the 30 degree fov of the same image:

The mirror is like the side view mirror in your car, "objects are closer than they appear."  It encompasses a wide viewing angle.  The top of the v-stab is at the middle point in the mirror (the other vertical object is the mast).  So although you can scan a wide area of sky in the mirror, you still can't see crap.

Fortunately, the mirrors can be disabled with push of a button, so they do not obscure my view of my lift line.

I only used mirrors in that game for eye candy, the only real use of them is to see what a con is doing when they are ALREADY 100yrds off your six. May I also ask what texture mods you are using because your game looks amazing compared to mine.

I really wanted mirrors on the Spitfire until I played Wings of Prey. The box mirror for the Spitfire just gets in the way most of the time and tracking targets around the mirror/roll cage area is a nightmare.

I like the smaller mirror for Spitfire's in IL2 much more. The option would be nice.

Example.

Kazaa how is Wings of Prey? I've been looking for an online WWII game but didn't want to risk dropping 50 60 bucks on a game that wasn't good.

The pic I posted is from a Spit IX.  The mirror on the Spit V is large and rectangular like Kazaa's pic.

and the consensus seems to be that you can't see crap in them, and that if you do see a bandit in a rear-view mirror it's too late.

The vets said the same thing, they also said the vibration from the engine made them even worse than useless most of the time. However, many still tried using them and at times placed them away from center-line so they wouldn't interfere in a turn fight.

Here is a good (and famous) example.

Kazaa how is Wings of Prey? I've been looking for an online WWII game but didn't want to risk dropping 50 60 bucks on a game that wasn't good.

Even though the game has already been released, it still needs a lot of work before it is worth the money.

Check out the demo if you want to soak in the eye candy.

don't expect anything other than a flight sim catered to the mass market with controls optimized for a game controller. It's a good beginner level sim for someone to cut their teeth on before moving to more intermediate and advanced flight sims.  The eye candy and immersion though is quite good.

Yeah this is basically what I picked up after playing it, kinda regretting about spending the money because of the eye candy lol. Haven't figured how to get snap views in that game really pissing me off that I cant look around with ease. Also is it me or do the planes fall apart like a Zeke getting hit by a 262. First mission with the Hurri II, I was knocking bomber wings off with quick bursts of the 303s like they were 30mms.

They should have worked on the DM a little more, with all the holes you can get in your wings you would think the plane would just become a rock.

Like this?

Was surprised to that my Spitfire Mk II flew just as good with all those holes as it did before all the damage.

With some of the extreme rear view restrictions in Il2, and lousy snap-view systesm,  the mirror is abit of help. Unless you're in a German plane of course, then you just have to live with it...

In AHII, with our rear views and good snap view system, it would be completely superfulous.
