Fighter version of Ju-88
« on: January 09, 2010, 08:33:07 PM »
The Ju-88 being one of the most versitile planes produced during world war 2, and yet we only have one variant.  Given that we already have the Ju-88A4 in game, couldn't we do something similiar to that of the B25's with weapon options.  Given it's payload and maneuverability for it's size, it could make a great attack plane, If it had the forward firepower of the fighter versions.  Something like this might even make the A20 a bit less common.

Are you suggesting that we put .50's in the nose of the Ju-88  :huh? If you have a variant in mind, please let us know, but we don't change armament from what is historicly accurate.

The "fighter" versions of the Ju88 [Ju-88C and Ju-88G] were night fighters only. They carried no bombs and had no bomb sights.

Since this game doesn't do night fighting, onboard radar, or anything like that, I doubt we'll ever see them (much as I'd like to play around with Ju-88Gs!)

The "fighter" versions of the Ju88 [Ju-88C and Ju-88G] were night fighters only.

Not all of them were nightfighters. Particularly some of the C variants were classified as "Zerstörer" (same as the early 110's), and used in that role for daylight fighting, mostly in Russia and on the Atlantic coast.

Am I the only one who thinks that sounds like a request for .50's in the Ju88?

This is news to me. However, come to think of it, I do recall seeing some 88Cs with "painted-on" canopies on the nose to make them look like normal bombers, but no radar sticking out of the nose.

That might explain it.

EDIT:

Am I the only one who thinks that sounds like a request for .50's in the Ju88?

I think so, yes.  :D

I believe that during 1943, Ju88's were used during the day to intercept American bombers. They were primarily used to launch WGr21's and were not very effective. Once the escorts showed up the Ju88's were withdrawn and used only at night.

On the Eastern front in 1943, 4./kg76 used the Ju88C-6 for train busting. To deceive soviet fighter pilots, they painted the nose to resemble a bomber with a glazed nose.

Lusche is correct from all that I have read on the c models.  Was really looking at the C versions, aramament changed between models but seems the common setup was one mg 151, one mg 15, and 3 mg 17's all fixed forward.  The big question is, did they carry bomb payloads or not.  Couldn't find a difinitive answer.  I did find it mentioned they were used for coastal and anti-shipping roles.  Anti-shipping would make me think they still carried a bomb load.  Only fighter variant I could find listing a bomb payload was the C2 with 550kg.

Were not the Ju88's used over the Bay of Biscay as fighters to intercept the Sunderlands and PBY's of Coastal Command?  I've read of Sunderlands been attacked by Ju88's. Though I dont know the Ju88's intended role there.
