Just heard on the military channel how the term Buffs came about. Stands for Big Ugly Fat ........ You have to use your imagination. I'm probably the last hear about this..aren't I.

Well - i think they used Big Ugly Fat Fellow as well - probably moreso back in the day - but i have heard it both ways.

The term "BUFF" can be traced back to RAF spitfire pilots describing the Lancasters as they watched them crossing the channel early in the war. This is according to an interview with spitfire pilots for the series Spitfire on the BBC. And yes, I am referencing a television interview.

And the brit in the interview used Big Ugly Fat Fellow.

They had a 'stock' SLUF begin takeoff roll and the Hot Rod alongside .. the Hot Rod crossed 10k agl before the 'stocker' had reached pattern alt.
