Lane Kiffin headed BACK TO USC!!!
« on: January 12, 2010, 08:26:58 PM »
After only one season in the SEC as the head coach at Tennessee the loud mouth is bailing out of a program that might have turned the corner IF he could have stopped being a smart butt! Oh and BTW Tennessee is facing NCAA investigation after this DA was the head coach for only one season for lots of allegations of improper recruiting just like what USC is facing now.

What USC needs to do is fire their AD but since they got popped awhile back for not having enough minority in high positions, Garrett is safe. Sad because he is a cancer on a otherwise good athletic program.  It was his hanging Carroll to dry that made going back to the NFL appealing to Carroll.

I think they will end up firing Garrett once they meet with the NCAA and the full extent of things that have happened on his watch are revealed. Also now with UT going under the microscope there is no telling what will finally come out about Tennessee and how things were done over the last 20 years.

Well, that bodes well for Clemson, South and North Carolina.

Yes it does Stoney. I know some guys who played there that have said if there was EVER a dirty program it was Tennessee under Fulmer when they were reporting everyone else, and it has been even more so since Kiffen got there from what they know. Pell Grants don't buy Escalades, BMW and Mercedes but they will buy the $2000 hoopty that no one wants.

Hmmm.  Growing up in western NC, you are always sensitive to what's going on in Knoxville.  Matter of fact, most of the really good recruits from the NC mountains grow up Tennessee fans rather than NC or NC State, etc; Heath Shuler being the biggest example.  Anyway, given that, I would have never thought that Fulmer would have condoned anything untoward--he always seemed above that.

To be honest, the biggest surprise in all of this is Carroll leaving USC.  I thought he was going to be there forever.  If I was a USC fan, Kiffin wouldn't inspire a lot of confidence.

I heard the police and fire had to escort Kiffin out of the campus due to protesters blocking his way out.  Anybody hear the same thing?

Lane Kiffin going back to USC, however, is a good move by USC.  Bringing a back a coach familiar with the area, the program, and knowing what is expected.

Think we all knew at some point Pete Carroll was going to go back to the NFL, it was just a matter of time.  I personally didnt think he would pick up a program like the Seahawks, but hey its still the west coast.

It probably is a way to get away from all the scrutiny though that is going on at USC.  The media is all over USC right now and to be in the situation has to be hell for the innocent athletes.  One player ruining it for all.  To be playing basketball at USC has to suck right now as their records wont even count.

How Pete Carroll will be reviewed after next season will be interesting.  Either he will be praised for turning around the Seahawks or scrutinized for leaving a successful program.

Tennessee, however, is put in a pretty crappy situation.  Coaching staff is up in the air and signing day is 3 weeks away.  This will definitely impact the recruits.

To be honest, the biggest surprise in all of this is Carroll leaving USC.  I thought he was going to be there forever.  If I was a USC fan, Kiffin wouldn't inspire a lot of confidence.

A lot of us over here in the Land of Troy were very surprised at the news and soon came to realize that Carroll's departure was pretty much forced on him by USC's AD that left him out to dry over the Bush and McKnight fiasco.  Can't really blame him leaving if the AD stabs you in the back and tries to make you the fall guy to cover his inept handling of USC's athletic program.  Garrett is a cancer that is infecting the Land of Troy and should be fired.

As for the reception that Kiffin is going to get, so far its been mixed.  He does present the possibility of stability because he is familiar with the Trojan's program and is bringing some talented people with him is further helped with the possible return of Chow.  On the other hand, he is fickle and will leave 'SC at the drop of a hat if something better comes along.

I didn't think Pete Carroll would ever leave.  He has a rare combination of great recruiting AND good coaching (in his position, managing) abilities... but in the NFL he only needs to be able to coach (and talent evaluation, which is only 1 aspect of recruiting).  So that doesn't effectively utilize all of his talents.  Also last time he was in the NFL he was a quasi-disappointment.  Although if I recall correctly, a lot of people were saying he shouldn't really have been fired from that job.  He was incredibly successful at USC, so much that going back to the NFL doesn't make a lot of sense, because he'll probably fail again.  The only way leaving USC makes sense is if he was dirty or he knew something was about to go down there, and he didn't want to be burned by it himself.

As for Lane, he's going to be terrible at USC.  Three years max and he's on the street, hope he got a guaranteed contract.

I hadn't heard about them blocking his way out.  I know there were a lot of people very upset on campus and the police were called out to handle the mobs.

Carrol wasnt the worst possible coach in the NFL.  His career record is 33-31 which isnt terrible compared to some of the other coaches in the NFL right now.

Look at Mangini who has gone 28-36 in his years as a head coach, Josh McDaniels huge slump in Denver in the season, and you have Marvin Lewis is just 1 win over .500.

Pete Carroll's head coaching career in the NFL wasnt long and who knows how it will go with his second chance.  People are quick to say how bad he was in the NFL yet there are coaches now who honestly are doing relatively the same that he did in the 90s.
