Motorized Bicycling
« on: January 13, 2010, 05:27:54 PM »
Sorry, post has nothing to do with the game other than wondering if anyone else here is into motorized bicycling.

Hope this post doesn't get bumped.  Not spamming, just looking for other pilots into the same hobby.

Here's a picture of my bike

To be street legal without license etc. bikes can't go over 30mph.  This one does close to 50 mph (but only when no cops in sight...lol).  Gas mileage varies with engine size.  Average mpg = 70.

It's getting to be a pretty popular sport.  I've been building bikes for just 6 months now.  Have built and sold a couple.  Good wholesome and inexpensive hobby.  Motorbicycling.com is good place to go to learn all about them.  My name on the MB forum is Maxvision.  Anyone wanting more info I'd be more than happy to help them out, just Private Message me at the forum.

Well, thanks for posting but you're only telling us how much you DON'T know.  If a motorized bicycle has an engine 50cc or less and will not exceed 30mph it does NOT classify as a moped.

Definate OT - but just thought I'd mention that in Boston they just started forcing people who were using motor scooters (i.e. less than 50 cc and less than 30 MPH) to license them - whereas previously they were classified in the same category as mopeds.

After the public outcry, they relented somewhat - you now need to license them but it's a sticker rather than a plate - when they first made the change they were going to ticket people for parking them on sidewalk (like they would a motorcycle).

So... bottom line is that it might be a moped today and a motorcycle tomorrow depending upon where it is!

Too much power on a thin frame can be dangerous. Get a Motorcycle.

i guess the only thing i wonder about is how much does that thing weigh? and if you get it actually going 50mph how do you stop with just ordinary bicycle brakes? :frown:

Wait... what're the pedals for if you have a motor? I'm sure it's fun scooting around on that thing, I just don't see why it is both motorized and pedaled...

The motor kit adds 25 lbs to the bike.  Bicycle brakes do take a bit of time to slow you down.  My next investment is disk brakes.  Takes me about 1/2 block to stop once I have it wound out with those calipers I have on it.

As for the guy above that asked why the pedals if it has a motor.  Cause you need to pedal to start the motor, and on very steep hills you may need to pedal to assist the motor.

I don't blame some of you guys for criticizing the whole idea...  I got into the whole thing by accident (sorta) then found out how much fun it is and got the bug.  And cruising past a cop, on a motorized bike, with no helmet, no license, no insurance is kind of a hoot  :neener:
