Here's a better question:

Why does the Ta-152 have an attack option if it can't carry a bomb?

More La 7 quandries

The so called landing speed was 135 to 137 km/hour  fully flapped presumably this was not the "fall to the ground speed"

Any body tried landing even the lightest La7 at 85 mph IAS in AH? (at any flap setting)

Forward edge slats deployed at 200 to 220 km/hour (approx 130 mph) I dont have any hard data for the onset of level stall without flap...but 100 mph would not seem unduly high given the slats opened above (slatless)stall speed.

My point? I think the La 7 was a little more stable at low speeds than the AH model.

re Flap deployment. This was via the hydraulic system. The pilot pushed a valve in one direction to raise the flaps and another to lower them. In the centre position they didnt move...so why does AH La 5/7 flaps rise automatically?

Landing the La-7 at anything less than 100mph isn't pretty.

It's low speed handling characteristics are pretty poor - its stall is pretty viscious. Tight turns at low alt with not much E are lethal. You hit the dirt before you know what happened.

But I don't really mind - it's an easy mode plane as it is, apparently.  ;)

The La-7 is one of those planes with some really great qualities that will get you killed if your not farmiliar with them...and even then if your not thinking 30 seconds ahead...you are doomed.

The La-7 has an instant turn rate that is phenominal, and a sustained rate that is still acceptable.  Problem is, if you get too slow, its turn rate is pretty dismal, and it departs like an undecided water buffalo in a bad mood.

The speed and acceleration, especially in a dive is nothing short of spectacular.  Unfortunatly, it makes a spectacular death when you plow into the ground at 550mph.  It also takes quite a bit of getting used to diving from above, as you tend to overshoot everything with a such regularity, that high yo-yo's become your best friend.

The ammo is powerful, and kills almost any plane with 1 good burst....provided that burst is from under 400 away.  Anything farther than that and your wasting your time.  Im not sure if its the velocity being very low, or just the wieght of the shells, but deflection shots beyond 300 are very hard to master, and even dead on someones six, you can fire all day at 600 and never score a hit.  So the limited ammo is more than enough for multiple kills (my record is 12), but its very important to only fire at very close range.

Nice assessment 2Late4U  :)

Its a beautiful plane if you fly smart and disciplined. But if you start to think its some uber 133t bird, your gonna die an embarassing death.  :D
