It's not that I can't handle it, I just rather not see it for what I hear it is about.  Thats all.
It follows the same exact plot line as Pocahontas. All political messages perceived to be in the movie (other than that of Pocahontas- "'primitive' people and those of other cultures are people too') are just that, perceived. You have to take things very literally, others very figuratively and jump through ridiculous hoops to make it into propaganda. Of course people always want something for there to be a sensation about.

I saw it, and though I'm not a huge science-fiction fan I thought it was a great movie. If you don't see it because someone told you it had liberal undertones, you're really doing yourself a disservice.

I usually watch movies that the trailer has something that catches my attention, then decide after if it was worth the rental. If it isn't, I don't recommend it to friends and family. I will probably see Avatar when it hits disc, but won't pay theater prices in case it doesn't appeal to me.

A lot of the 'older movies' that we remember from our youths had political statements, an example was High Noon which is considered to be an allegory for blacklisting that was going on during the HUAC years in the '50s.  John Wayne despised the movie so much because of the message of the movie that he teamed up with Howard Hawks to make Rio Bravo which was a conservative response to High Noon.

" May I ask of Saving Private Ryan and Heartbreak Ridge of what political message you see? "

I don't see one.  I enjoyed them each very much for what they were and that was entertainment.
There's been no recent paradigm shift. Maybe it's just you noticed somehting at this particular
point in your life. It's always been this way.
Although the extremes from Hollywood would be imo movies like The Green Berets and "300"

(although for *real* propaganda see Michael Moores junk and just as bad is the stuff Fox
 "news" pumps out)

Anyway.  Essentially what Shamus said,  plus 1.

Avatar is Pocahontas with aliens standing in for the Native Americans and an American military supported corporation standing in for English settlers. If you could handle Pocahontas without your brain imploding from evil liberal propaganda then you can handle Avatar.

This may be the smartest joke ever.

As near as I can tell, it's still up to me what I watch or what my kids watch.  Considering we always talk about stuff and they know where we stand on things, I don't worry about what a movie might say in terms of it's 'agenda'.  I figure it's still up to me to help my kids process things and make up their own minds.

In the end, a movie is entertainment.  If I've done such a lousy job teaching my kids that a movie can determine their politics, it's my own fault.

Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
