Is it me or is our entertainment loaded with.....
« on: January 15, 2010, 11:00:03 AM »
Polital messages?

It seems that since the mid-90's, movies have sub-plots of anti-conservative, anti-gun, anti-industrialization, evil white men, men are dumb.

I have not seen Avatar yet and maybe I won't.  I heard that the plot was not that terrific but I had a enviromentalist sub-plot.  I miss the older movies where men could be men and not metro-sexuals, real plots, classy lady actresses, ect...

I enjoyed the movie, good acting, amazing 3D and CGI, and the plot wasn't bad.  I don't know about this shift to anti-gun or whatever in movies, it's hard to see a movie today without a gun in it, even kids movies.  I "played guns" when I was a kid and there are plenty of kids today "playing guns" too.  Society has shifted over the last two or three decades towards more environmentalism and that is being reflected in our movies.  I think it's a little ridiculous to say there is a liberal agenda and somehow the dems are controlling all of our entertainment.  Free market determines what movies do well.

What can I say, I can drive a tractor, I'm an NRA member, but I also really enjoyed Avatar and the plot.

AMEN!!!!! If you take it for what it is and realize the underlying message, and ignore it, some entertainment can be gleaned. However, the younger folks with mush for brains come out hating for example the Marines, "evil corporations" or buying into global warming because they do not know they are being indoctrinated.

I use Family Guy as a good example. When the first 2 seasons came out there were a few political jabs but I can take a joke and it was a funny show. Now, it is just a platform to bash conservativism and push a liberal agenda......total crap. I just want to be entertained, I do not need the morons in Hollywood trying to teach me a lesson.

I have heard of folks walking out bored with the movie. Some are Ah folks.

I wait to watch movies at home even though I can go see them free.

Yeah, I watched a couple of older movies that were funny and entertaining and that being said, a more intellectual plot than what I seen today.  I have not seen a good comedy in a long time and if I do, they are older movies.

The 'human beings are bad' subplots are getting old.

Movies need heroes and villains.  Since youth culture took off in the 60s the villains have sometimes tended to be "the establishment."  This plays into young people's natural rebelliousness as they attempt to figure out the world for themselves.

Star Wars is a good example of this, or Titanic.  The villains are the establishment, and the youth are the heroes.  It's not a coincidence that the audience these movies are seeking is the audience that can most readily identify with the heroes.

I wouldn't go looking for a political agenda when the monetary agenda is much more compelling to the movie producers.

"youth culture took off in the 60s"

In the 50's really if we gloss over the whole youth rebellion of the 20's
and 30s'

Eh. Did everyone forget all of the movies such as Red Dawn, Navy Seals, Heartbreak
Ridge, The Patriot,  "300," Under Seige, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Vantage
Point, The Hurt Locker and all of the other hawk movies that came out to give conservatives
a wood plank?
I can't really begin to count all of the movies that Hollywood made in the past 20 yrs that
had South American, Middle Eastern or some other bad guy who are "try'n to be supress'n
us 'Mericans" but are beaten back by a small handful  of the "good guys."

I offer that you are seeing a lot of political messages in Hollywoods films that don't
sit well with you then perhaps your own agenda or ideology is just too "far out"
there and a little self-reflection is in order?

I hate anti-gun thingies, cos I really want to get shot  :bolt:
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
