New Engine..Remember This ???
« on: January 21, 2010, 07:41:58 PM »

Its a 1988 Cassie and
Currently it has a 1994 stock 350 TBI
Its getting a New 383 Stroker in 3 - 4 weeks the build starts Feb 1st.
It will have Roller Cam, Rockers...Ill list all when I get the specs back.
For now ill keep the Stock TBI. I will be putting on a New Holley TBI 670 CFM once I put in my Posi Rear and Front ends in.

Horse power is 190Hp Stock
Stroker w/ Holley TBI should go 350+
Torque around 400ft/lbs

I cant wait...

Whoo Hoo...

Hunt yourself up a stock GM 454 throttle body. It flows 650 CFM, and is light years ahead of the Holley stuff.

How does it work with the Stock computer? keeping in mind I can get a new chip burned to my specs. Ty for the advice.

Kam

Never Mind I found the answer...TY again..

It will work best with the Holley stand alone controller.
the reason being, the SB 350 has a 4L60 behind it and the ECM is pulsed for around 40 lbs of fuel delivery per hour, a new chip will solve that problem.
The 454 never came with a 4L60, but a 4L80 and it seems to me that the number of pins (electrical plug) on the 60 has 11 and the 80 has 7 or it's the other way around.
The best way to find out is to call the tech departments at,
Art Carr Transmissions
B&M Transmissions
Raptor Transmissions
Holley Tech
They will want to know how many pins the transmission electrical plug has, on the top passenger side, this will give them reference to exactly what you have.
These guys work with this stuff every day and are in the know.
Mixing and matching electronic stuff is possible if the ECM recognizes the different components.

your 88 has a computer ?   i didn't think they started using them until the 90's  i had a 88 silverado 3/4 ton and i shoved a ZZ3 crate motor in it and never came across any computer, just your basic hookup 5 wires , Oil, Water temp and the wire to the HEI, starter wire and starter solenoid wire, never seen a computer in it, maybe it depended on what part of the country you lived in.  :headscratch:

SM Chevy's are my all time favorite engines, you can build mass power for a cheap price and there dependable  :aok

They had throttle body injection if im not mistaken (2 injectors sitting on top of a carb like unit)   real fuel injection is directly threaded into the intake ports 1 injector per port, but i bet Cap could tell us.

TBI  stands for Throttle Body Injection...It started in 88' yes real late 87's. From 88 to 94 other than some cam and computer differences along with A/C and alternator, water pump and belts there the same core engine.

If you go back I have a 1994 engine in my 88'. I am getting a 94 383 Stroker. That is a 400 Crank and Diff. rods with .30 over on the bore.

The only real difference between the 454 throttle body and the 262/305/350 throttle body is the size, and the size of the fuel injectors. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the aftermarket chips and throttle bodies. In most cases, a little work with the base timing will do just as well. A GM throttle body, like those found on trucks, has a throttle position sensor, a Idle Air Control motor, and two fuel injectors, as far as electronics. Other than the injectors, about 95% of the electronics are the same. The fuel injectors on the 454 throttle bodies flow more fuel, and you'll need more fuel anyway, feeding the extra HP you'll have.

So would you see a mechanic about a fuel infection? Or just have your vehicle sit in the garage and drink chicken noodle motor oil?  :D
No one knows what the future may bring.

Post the cam specs, heads, and other mods when you get done, kamori, and we can try to help point you in the right direction.
I've read and heard pro and cons about using the 454 throttle bodies; seems their mounting flange is different than the 5.0/5.7L throttle body flange and can be a source of vacuum leaks, plus some people have had to have their intake bored to 2" to accomodate the larger 454 butterlies.
There are different schools of thought on making a modded TBI engine make power.
I myself went with the stock size 5.7L throttle body that came on my truck, and stock 61 lb/hour injectors, but I upped the fuel pressure with a fuel pump for a TPI Camaro.
I am looking to replace the stock injectors in the near future with either Caprice police car 9C1 injectors rated at 68 lb/hr, or injectors from a 454 equipped truck so I can lower my fuel pressure as it is causing some idle issues due to the high pressure.
Depending on how far you want to go with this project, you might find yourself needing a vacuum referenced adjustable fuel pressure regulator (VAFPR) to help lower the fuel pressure at idle and make tuning easier.
If you want to do your own tuning, visit www.moates.net for just about ALL your tuning needs for your vehicle.
The software for datalogging and tuning is abundant, and a lot of it is free, it just takes time to get it right.
I've been tuning my truck lately with a wide band O2 sensor to try and get it as close to perfect as I can before I start really pushing the truck hard.
Let me know if I can be of any help.  I have a lot of sites bookmarked that are all about tuning your computer controlled vehicle......just let me know.

eddiek..Ty for the thoughts. I will let you know. The builder is very well known in our parts and trusted. He has done this build for 30 different systems like mine. The nice thing is as i upgrade my TBI the engine will respond accordingly. The engine will be around $5,000. Ill post specs as soon as i get them next week.

Cool.....you were smart to choose someone who's done this before, kam.
Around here, other than installing parts, there aren't that many folks who know how, or will take the time to get everything dialed in right.
So I've done it myself, slowly, by doing a lot of research before I buy anything or change something in the tune.
I talked with a fairly well known engine builder near here last year, as I was planning this project, and his attitude was "just stick your parts in and it'll run okay", which isn't MY attitude.  I've spent a lot of time the past 4-5 years reading up on tuning both TBI and TPI engines before I even bought anything, just so I had a clear idea of what I was getting into.
It can be frustrating as heck, but when you find what is causing that flat spot at 5500, get the lean pop tuned out, etc, and you do it yourself.....yeah, it's worth it.  :D
