Need advice from other drummers
« on: January 22, 2010, 02:54:20 AM »
Well my fellow drummers, I'm in need of a little advice if you can help. I've been thinking of what I would like to have as a custom design on my bass drum heads if I ever wanted to get that done one day, and recently I've finally figured out what I want.If you've ever had this done for your drums where did you get it done? A music store, or maybe if they don't do more complex-ed or personal designs, perhaps there's a website you visited?

What website would you recommend? (if you know of any)
Approximately how much would it cost? (did a little research and it looks about $80-$200 depending on the drum head size and what design you want)
For real specific designs (maybe a show/band you like) you there be any copyright issues that would need to be worked out?

Any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to be spending $200 to get this done just to find out when I get the drum heads they messed up on what I wanted.  :salute

I always used a close friend.  There are always tons of young budding artists looking for work around town (and most happen to be cute girls).  That way you can be sure you are dealing with someone you trust, and they will put that little extra effort into your work.  $80 was what I always offered to start.
A little suggestion, keep it simple.

tat shop  :aok make sure its seal after it is done. with a thin coat or it will crack as the head pulses.

I personally wasnt allowed (by contract) to put any design on my front head. I was told "it draws attention away from the maker logo/brand"

I have been playin' drums 40 years now  :old:, I've had 3 drum sets and 15 different bands, so don't make anything to permanent
I usually make my art from cardboard and tape it to the head, this will last about 4 or 5 years which is longer than most bands do.
My latest kit is the best money can buy Maple Starclassics, 11 drum, 10 cymbal, Chimes & Swedish bells, etc.
I'll post a pic if I get around to it.
Good luck latrobe  :rock

Wow, are you Mike Portnoy?  I wouldn't know what to do with all of that.

The fanciest thing I have is a double kick pedal.

I'd take the following, though:  (circa 1972, of course)

Ludwig, Sparkle Green (Green Sparkle)
color #-2004
14"x26" Bass Drum-model #-926P
Rail Mount-model #-782-1
Cymbal Mount-model #-1372
Sure Grip Curved Retracting Spurs model #-1306
10"x14" Tom-model #-946P
16"x16" Floor Tom-model #-950P
16"x18" Floor Tom-model #-952P
6.5"x14" Chrome Supra-Phonic Snare Drum-model #-402

That would be better than the 30 y/o Pearl set I have   :devil

My drummer had some kid in a high school graphics class make him a couple samples.

We wound up using the second one ( comes in handy for shirts as well)

Pretty sure he threw the kid 50 bucks for his efforts.

Like someone else said--there are many "budding" artists out there eager to show there stuff!
