FM2
« on: January 24, 2010, 12:57:05 PM »
I've recently started flying the FM2 off a carrier when intending to fight, with the hogs being my "heavy haulers" for when ords are needed.

Great little plane, very manuverable, tough, and hard to hit. What I want to know is, are there any good tactics to use, or is it more of a "fly it how you can" plane? Already found that extended verticle isn't too great, and the AH wiki page doesn't go into enough depth.

So would it best to go after the slow and low planes, or is it acceptable to lure people into turning with you?

same thing? Cept the low and slow planes dont have a choice. Yeah the fm2 is a nice plane. I would keep it high and fast in a target rich environment and would drag opponents far away if im forced to turn fight. Rebuilding e midfight is not really a good option.

Yeah, fly a SBD. Better bombload, sexier lines, and turns even better.

I love the FM2 but hate the rearward view (using trackIR)

I have my little periods where I will fly it alot, and I always have pretty good luck, sometimes I fly 6 or 7 sorties in a row with it

But these little FM2 love sessions always end the same way, after bunch of sorties I get complacent, and inevitably I get a bad guy in the huge blindspot and get insta-towered,  get POd and stop using it for a while.

its fun to fight in, but annoying to have this sense of foreboding, when you fly in a straight line for very long.. get the creepy feeling like when ya walk in water and cant see the bottom.. then something brushes against your leg  :uhoh

You MAY want to try an F4F, same general airframe, but no WEP, but it comes with something that makes up for it: a 6 GUN PACKAGE! I don't see any reason to take an FM2 over an F4F because of that reason.

Ah the bane of most Navy planes. Nice roomy cockpit with plenty of room for a guy to sneak up and cut your throat. :D

4 guns are more than enough to kill with. In fact I often take the 4-gun package on the F4F-4. There are less guns but more ammo per gun (they fire longer).

The reason to take the FM2 is the performance gain. Plain and simple. Same reason folks fly the A6M5 more than the A6M2.

I know, I always get that feeling when climbing, when flying strait, and when turning. Like there is just this guy in a Yak9T, with the uber cannon that can kill me before I can react.

Its the only plane I up from a carrier to actually fight in. It can slug it out with almost any plane. The only real problem I seem to run into are HO'ing Hurricanes, and niki's. They have trouble turning with you, our just plain can't, and so they say "screw it, this guy just pissed me off. I'm Ho'ing him."

I rate the FM-2 as either #1 or 2 on the list of the game's best planes that no one really thinks about.

Small and insanely hard to hit, good gun package, incredibly maneuverable, and pound-for-pound the toughest plane in the game. Her only shortcoming is lack of speed and climb, but it is SO much fun running across those Spit pilots who think they can turn with everything. And showing them just how WRONG they are.  :t :t :t
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
