Saw the RAPTOR in flight ( was awesome )
« on: January 28, 2010, 09:25:42 AM »

That plane put on a great show for the crowd !!!  That planes ability to hover and perform a full vertical climb straight away after takeoff was just astounding. If you have a chance to catch one at an airshow make sure and take the family. You will not be disapointed.

That is actually the F-35 that you are thinking of, not the F-22.  :aok And the F-35 is the first fighter plane to feature 360 degree warfare. This means that this plane can lock on any target and fire a missile in any direction, even if the target plane is behind it. Despite the F-35's ability to hover, the F-22 can fly faster and longer. And also the F-22 can out-accelerate and out turn it. And for that reason, the F-22 still remains as the number one best fighter out there right now.

TO THE BEST OF my knowledge, the raptor cannot perform a full vertical take off.

They had the F-22 Raptor on station at the show. We enjoyed watching it being put through the paces. Thanks for the correction hyperion you are correct it is the f-35 Lightning II for full Vert takeoff. The F-22 did however do a few crowd pleasing moves such as using it's thrust vectoring to hover /stall and sway from side to side ( left to right ) , 30ft corkscrew and hit mach1 and of course the all famous crowd buz bye !!

The F35 is not making the air show rounds yet. It still hasn't make the vert flight yet. They are working up to that now. Will happen in the next month or two. The first 2 F35B's are at Pax right now starting the test flt program.

Well it can but you have to stand it on it's tail while on the ground first. It has the raw power to get off the ground :aok

No kidding!! I was talking to a Raptor driver at Langley a few months back and he told me that. He said they can fly it right on the edge on the stall at high alpha, point the nose straight up, and "go baby, go!!" (his words LOL).

I saw the raptor at edwards last summer, they flew it for about 20 mins, it looked like a ufo. went straight up. Sat on it's aft for a few seconds (literally at a stand still) at high alt, made a sharp turn, and induced a flat spin.
Twice.
Of course, it did all the easy spins & rolls...

I saw it fly while on my lunch break when they brought it to Oshkosh.  It was pretty impressive with its maneuvering, I'll admit, even though I immediately lose interest when they replace the prop with a blow dryer.

I'm ok with the "F-22" part of the name, but have to laugh at the "Raptor" designation.  Ridiculous title to tack on.  That clumsy hunk of metal isn't even close to replicating what a raptor can do.  Just sayin'...

That would be like renaming C3PO to "Olympic Gold Medalist".

There's a history with naming fighters after animals, you have the Eagle, Hornet, Tomcat, Mustang and so on.

Tomcat

While it's a continuation of the Cat name in the Grumman stable, the Tomcat isn't named after Jerry's cartoon costar.
