Some of the dumbest people on earth
« on: January 31, 2010, 11:08:50 AM »
Over the years, I have concluded that you can find some of the dumbest people on earth on automotive internet forums. Well, at least the dumbest people on earth who drive.

I was visiting a Jeep forum (dedicated to the newer JK Wrangler) and found a poll had been posted. It was a general interest poll, just to determine who was driving what and with what option packages. Simple enough.

Understand, that unlike owners of a new or late model Benz or Range Rover, Jeep Wranglers draw owners from the full spectrum of society. From CEOs to Blue Collar types, from college professors to guys who missed their 6th grade graduation because they were attending the birth of their 5th child.

Thus, I expected to find the results to be interesting, to say the least.

The first question related to the model year of their Jeep. Check off the box corresponding to the year of your Wrangler.

The second question was, do you own a 2 door or 4 door (Unlimited)? Check off the appropriate box.

Third question was, select the model you purchased. X-Sport, Sahara or Rubicon. Check off the appropriate box.

Fourth question was, select the type of transmission. 6 speed manual or automatic. Check off the appropriate box.

Here's the results:

98.74% of those responding picked a model year. 1.26% apparently didn't know what year their Jeep was made (nearly correlates to the percentage of chrystal meth users in society).

84.17% drive either a two door or an Unlimited. 15.83% drive a mystery Wrangler or never bothered to count the doors (you can leave your shoes on for that exercise). Perhaps they thought that two half doors only add up to one and there was no check box for that option.

82.91% own an X (Sport), a Sahara or a Rubicon. 17.09% own something else, which I assume is that mystery Wrangler again. Perhaps they did what many do and just removed the stickers and forgot what they bought....

92.96% have either the manual or the automatic. 7.04% obviously don't have a transmission. Must be the Flintstone model.

To obtain the above percentages, the person taking the poll would have had to not check boxes to all questions. All they had to do was check any box for each question, simple enough. Guess not.

Internet polls contribute at least one positive... They provide a nearly perfect corollary to the premise that you can't fix stupid.

If you want to kill a few hours go check out some of the threads at pirate4x4. Granted there is some really good information and some amazingly talented posters, but like you said, there is also a huge range of people who go there.

My favorites are when people post pictures of their offroading adventures, including them just tearing the **** out of some natural hill side. Then someone goes on and says that they really shouldn't be doing that, and they come back super defensive with the attitude "this is MY America". Its amazing some of these people can use a computer.
The journey is the destination.

Indeed, there are some very smart and well informed posters to the Wrangler forums as well. Unfortunately, it's the supremely dumb ones who post the most. I actually saw one guy state that we should pay attention to brain-dead Joe, because he has 2,500 posts.

There is a current thread asking for advice driving on sand. The less than smart know-it-all's get it completely wrong, but they will argue to hell freezes over than argue some more on the technique needed for driving on ice.

The bad news is that 4x4 newbies haven't the experience to determine who is right; the incessant load mouth who knows nothing or the guy who posts once and nails it correctly.

Lol Widewing, you need to come to my school for a few days and see how much they know about their cars. Some girl posted or asked me "What does washer fluid low mean?" and I first replied with an "ROFL YOU IDIOT HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY NOT KNOW THAT!" then I told her all she had to do was to pop the hood and pour some water or washer fluid in the washer fluid tank, which she thought was too hard for her  :rofl :rofl :rofl

Driving on sand?  By no means am I an off-road expert, not even an off-road novice... wait have I ever even driven off-road? :headscratch: But... from just thinking about it isn't driving on sand relatively simple?  Don't you just deflate your tires a bit to maximise surface area, don't drive in the same tracks as someone else and stay well away from any water? Mud=bad, ocean=worse? But otherwise have fun and try not to hit any cacti, or cayotes for that matter?

And something I'm actually curious about since it appears that Texas is approaching another ice-age, for driving on ice... wouldn't you want the opposite; tires that are narrow and maximize ground pressure on the smallest area possible in order to dig down so that they punch through the ice to the road?
Although I must admit it is entertaining watching Austin, TX drivers attempt to drive on icy roads.

How can somebody not take the time to know what vehicle they bought?

2001 Toyota Tundra, 4.7 liter V8, 4 speed automatic transmission, four wheel drive, SR5 trim, TRD package, extended cab.

Is that really so much to remember?

Yes you often come across stupid people driving cars and in other situations. But where you see it the most is in the antics of car drivers. I often wonder though just how these people cope with all of life's complications and complexities. I mean just how do they survive?

NOT Even remotely surprised.

you've no clue how many customers i write up, that don't know what year or model car they're driving.

you should also see the looks on their faces, when asked if it's automatic or manual. most don't have a clue what the difference is anymore.

it's just as bad dealing with men these days, as it is women.
