Welll i downloaded GIMP, and screwed around with it for awhile. then i made these. pls tell me if u like them. comments and ideas are much appreciated :salute

Try cutting back on the radius of the starburst. Here's what I usually churn mine out like:

Hey Rhah,

Not sure how to do it in GIMP, but using Photoshop what I have to do is trace around my plane to copy it. Blur the picture, then paste the airplane on top of the blurred picture.
there's no real "easy" way of bluring everything but the plane that I know of.

there's no real "easy" way of bluring everything but the plane that I know of.

If you trace around your plane, you can invert the selection to select everything BUT the plane.  Then blur.  I'd make a copy of the layer first (easier to "undo").  You can turn off/on the blurred layer to quickly see the difference.  You can also play around with layer masks and such.  The burn and dodge tools are great for touch-ups of "just that little piece of picture", if you need to lighten or darken parts and pieces.  Works great for fixing exposure issues in photos of people and landscapes.
