You don't need to use XL engines, you know.

You don't need to use XL engines, you know.

You do if you want to carry any firepower. Sponge-mechs are overrated! MaxTech even had provisions for XXL engines. I always found Clan vs 3050/55 IS to be fairly well balanced... right until the Clan players through ROE out of the window. Then it becomes a one-sided beating. Clan designs, except for a few like Daishi-Widowmaker, were ammo explosions waiting to happen anyways. Soon as that side torso is gone you're +10 heat and pretty much useless for anything except gauss rifle fire.

I've literally played every battletech game there is. Every PC game, every console game, the pods, the tabletop RPG, every board game from 3025 (4th sucession war) to 3072 (jihad wars). Played in a 2 day, 8 player Tukkayid event with 200 minis. Even played some Battlespace and AeroTech. I've got every FASA BT publication archived as a PDF, including copies of all the original maps, and 16 issues of Battletechnology Magazine. Something about big robots blowing stuff up appeals to me...

Dl'd it, played it. Needs a few (and by few I mean alot) of adjustments. 1 thing is there is no separation between IS ad Clan. You can pilot either no matter what side your on. That being said the only mode that seems to run in this game is the Solaris arena so that may be it. And for the GVr's if you thought stunt tanks in Aces was bad, wait'll you get a load of this. You can knock down trees, after you do a 360 somersault with a twist 20 feet in the air. Joystick support is touchy, or non-existent.

Now that being said it is a cool game. It is in Beta so hopefully the above will be fixed. Graphics are great, especially when a Mech goes critical (mini-nuke, must've been a B-29 somewhere) and the ability to choose which way you want to play is fun. I'm going to keep an eye on it see what happens. One thing I thought tho was this genre would be an excellent for HTC. With the current gameplay model in Aces High, you'd have a hell of a game.

Depends.  Inner Sphere mechs on standard engines have about as much tonnage available for weapons as Clan mechs using XL engines, but are slower.  It doesn't help that Inner Sphere weapons are significantly less powerful per ton than Clan weapons.  That is why IS forces are supposed to have about twice the tonnage of Clan forces for balanced play.

Ever play "MechForce" on the Amiga?  I think it was the best computer version of the board game ever made.  Spent many, many hours on that one....

Played it, but didn't own it :( Never did own an Amiga.

There's a modern version very similar. MegaMekNet. http://www.mekwars.org/
Java based, runs okay. All the rules and gear is in there. Some online campaigns going also. Though running against PC AI, it tends to crap itself with more than 4 or 5 opponents.

Not very newbie friendly is it? Acronym after acronym. Or, is it a better idea to buy one of those rule books?

I so love Mechwarrior that I immediately bought Crysis as soon as I saw this thread.  Back in my college days, some friends and I made at least one road trip a month to go to the Battle Tech Center in Chicago to play the pod game.  Great stuff!

So anyway, I bought Crysis and have it installed no problem.  I'm currently downloading the Mechwarrior MOD...  But I don't know anything about Torrents and don't know what I need to use a Torrent file...  So, I'm downloading the primary file the old fashioned way...  Thing is, I don't see a regular download listing for the patch...  It is only listed under the Torrents...

Question is...  Is the a place to download the patch without Torrent?  Or...  What exactly do I need or need to do to use the torrent download?

I've just never had any reason to do the whole torrent thing and lack the appropriate knowledge.

Thanks in advance.   :salute

Get a bitTorrent Client like uTorrent: http://www.utorrent.com/
Download the torrent file from the site and open it with the client.

Wait a while, and voila, it is all downloaded.

Anyone play/remember the old GeNie 'Battletech Online' ?  It was great...for the day.  Dial-up, with matches determining control of resources and planets.  Fun stuff.  I wish someone would get together and design a persistent online Battletech sim MMO...
