Interesting, I'd read about this one in 2nd Tactical Air Force Vol.4, this aircraft had appeared in print before but the letter code to match the serial MP147 had been unknown (erroneously thought to be either '?' or 'A' or 'Z') due to a lack of substantiating photos. Looks like they finally found some... 'U'.

As time goes by unfortunately more information on aircraft that have been a mystery as to what they looked like are slowly coming to light. As the servicemen are dieing off their belongings such as photos are being sold off or donated by family members to museums.

For example this picture I found just tacked on the wall at a private Museum I visited in Australia over Christmas.

For years I have been looking for a complete photo of this plane in it's bare metal livery but could only find partial pictures of it as I was researching it for possible inclusion in AHII. I am still looking for a piece of missing info I once had & I think it may be eligible?

Any ways back to my point it belonged to a former RAAF member who died & a relative just walked in to the museum & just handed it to them.
So in one way a boon for the likes of us & historians & sadly a reminder of a generation that is fading away.

I remember reading that too Jocko, I was thinking "its probably the same closeup shot as in the 2nd Tactical Air Force book" before I clicked on the link.

It seems the checkerboard band on the rear fuselage is a post war addition so I'll have to lose that on the skin, which is a shame. I have ordered the transfer sheet from the company in order to get the info sheet it comes with, I'll sell it on once I'm done with it.

Actually, after thinking about it, I might be able to do the checkerboard. They were painted on after VE Day but before VJ Day. So technically they were on the plane during WW2 but not in a combat role. One of those grey area things I guess.

Sounds a tad like the above Lanc when I find the info again. :D

A war bond drive visit by a single aircraft would not constitute combat, so I would say probably not.  There was an single OD  Green B-29 touring bases in England in 1944 as well.

Grey Area = Post War?  Also probably not.

There used to be a 357th FG P-51 with Post War buzz numbers painted on the underside of the wings that disappeared shortly after the black P-38 did.  Perhaps it's just out of the rotation.

At least one Yak-9U has a post war scheme, however, so maybe it is a grey area.  Yaks are an old model and really haven't been scrutinized much though, so who knows?

More to this plane than what is shown so far when I find the info again you will see it has an outside chance because it did do a mission or two in this paint scheme but never fired a shot in anger.

Did Lancasters see combat in the Pacific?
It would be interesting to find out.

Well at one time I did have a link prior to my old PC failure back in November that made mention that after this plane was stripped of paint it was asked to help look for a enemy ship or Sub that was operating off the coast of Australia. I don't remember exactly what as it has been close to two years since I saved said link & last read it. It had two huge fuel tanks inside of the bomb bay & they took one or both of them out & threw a few bombs on board & was sent out to look with other aircraft & if they found this ship try & sink it. They never found the target & hence never fired a shot.

I had all the info I needed once I found a complete photo to at least give it a possible chance for inclusion into the game. With out the link I basically have nothing but some nice info of a bare skinned Lanc in the RAAF based in Australia. I have hunted high & low since my return from Australia for the web site I am looking for but have come up blank. I have not found anything in any official web site & have no clue at this point where else to look?

Some more info of the plane if your interested.
