What Is The Commander's Seat For In The Panzer?

I noticed that there is a commander's station in the Panzer.  What is its purpose when there is no MG to fire there?  Is it just for history's sake or what?

One thing you can do with it, after hitting the 3 key, hit F3, and you can pan in external view with your joystick for better vision.
