Music Question
« on: February 07, 2010, 05:30:10 PM »
Alright, well, I like loud, dramatic, orchestral music. My favorite classical piece is the 1812 overture, cannons roaring. Another favorite being Unsung War off of the Ace Combat 5 sound track. Its beautiful!

So what I am coming here fore is this: I am looking for the most dramatic, stirring, moving, loud renditions of the following:

1) National Anthem (With and without vocals if you all know one)
2) Air Force song
3) Navy's song
4) Any other dramatic, patriotic song

Some artist or album names with these would be GREATLY appreciated!

Philip Glass.

A good way to find new music is Pandora.com. It is free and plays music similar to what you like. For example right now I am listening to a station titled Deathcab for Cutie. The first song that comes up is from Deathcab for Cutie, the next song is a band with similar qualities. If I say I like the song, they will add qualities from that song to the station search, if I say I do not then they will not play that song again.

In February of 1998, I took my wife to see The Black Watch at Joe Louis Arena (home of the Detroit Red Wings).   They played a rendition of "Semper Fidelis" that had every Marine standing and saluting from WWII to then present.   None of their eyes were dry and the three that were around me "could not believe how terrific they were".

I'd be more than happy to help you out on this one, but a bit more detail would be nice.  Are we looking for big brass + loud bass drum shots or are you open to some other types?

As for patriotic, your cold war era parents may not be pleased. but check this guy out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMZfXN1UOpw  In my opinion one of if not the most powerful orchestral national anthems ever written.  (Sorry Francis Scott Key + John Stafford Smith)  That is not the best version of it, but alas.

Absolutely everything. I LOVE the traditional 1812 Overture, and at the same time, I wish I could find a studio version of Jimmie Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner. Basically every that really moves you.

As for the others, thank you! I am looking them up right now!

YES! Love that track! Did you hear the soundtrack from AC4 for the mission "Megalith" ? Think the name is "Agnus Dei" and it's just amazing. I also love "Zero" from AC0 (I have the full soundtrack CD's for AC5 and AC0 and play them while playing AHII  :D :rock ). Zero is a bit more fast paced, almost rock style, song but it was set to a one on one fight with Pixy and Cipher (2 main characters of the game). Still pretty awesome! I love the music the do for this series, it's a big part as to why I believe it is the number one game series EVER!

Have you heard of a music group called "Immediate Music" ?? They do orchestra, epic style music. The songs aren't as long as the 1812 Overture (most running anywhere from 50 seconds - 3 minutes). Here's one of my favorites by them - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6nN-t87EN8

Was it "Semper Fidelis" or The "Marines' Hymn?"  Either one brings a tear to my eye.  You hear The Hymn, all the time, every day, but when I hear "Semper Fidelis" it reminds me so much of walking across the parade ground on graduation day.

I bought the CD there.   The Regimental Band of the Scots Guards did (in order):  Dixie, Semper Fidelis, New York, New York, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Stars and Stripes Forever.   It was a powerful segment of the show and my eyes watered.  But seeing grown men crying, is not easy to "hold back" and I barely did.

If either ever come around to the US again, I'd recommend anyone attend.

I wish I could find a studio version of Jimmie Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner.
Why???
I have a big collection of Jimi Hendrix stuff that I downloaded and it has a studio version of the Star Spangled Banner, at least credited to him... I think it's 4 independently recorded guitar tracks, and none of the rest of the Experience plays on it, and it sounds more like Yngwie Malmsteen... it's incredibly cheesy.
The Woodstock version is the best.
