New Computer
« on: February 09, 2010, 07:11:53 PM »
I just got a new computer.

Here are the specs:

Intel i5-750
6GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
750GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive 7200 RPM
nVIDIA GeForce G310 512MB DDR3
Windows 7 64 bit

I downloaded AH onto the the computer.  I was getting 59-60fps w/ the graphics settings at default.  I upped the object detail and ground detail range to max.  The fps stayed at 59-60.  I select self shadow and the fps drops to 54.  Then I select smooth shadow and it drops to 11.  All of these examples are sitting in a 190D on the runway, engine running.

I'm very green when it comes to computer stuff so please put any tips into layman's terms.

Thanks alot,

Gear

edit: I'm really not concerned too much about the problem.  On my last computer i was gettting 25fps w/ graphic settings as low as they can go.  To fly around w/ the hi-res terrain and w/ the object and ground detail maxed at a smooth 60fps is great to me.  My concern was w/ the drop in fps w/ the selection of the shadowing options.

Thanks again

The "self-shadow" option requires a very high end video card in order to process all the data in real-time.  It also requires the computer be very "clean" in order for the CPU to not waste time running excess background processes.

HP is one of the worst offenders of loading up a computer with resource wasting background processes.

Thanks Skuzzy.  That confirms what I was thinking.

That processor is only 2.66 GHz

Looks like the choke point to me, if its sharing resources..

"Self-shadow" is purely video card dependent.  Very little CPU power is needed for it as the work is mostly done on the video card.

I've done a little tweeking and now I'm getting 78fps inflight w/ object and ground detail maxed.  It drops a little on the initial entrance into the fight, but then stabilizes in the 60s solid.  I'm happy.
