That's one game I have on CD. Both the Collector's Edition of X-Wing and TIE Fighter.  The mission I found most annoying in X-Wing was the 9th mission in the first tour (If I recall correctly).  You had to kill a Frigate with an A-Wing all by your lonesome while protecting some Supply Containers.  More than a few times, the blasted Frigate would come out of hyperspace right in the middle of the supply containers and quickly caused me to fail the mission.  Other times, it would hyper out well away from them, but would quickly dispatch me somehow.  Of course, you couldn't make your self invulnerable, or you couldn't progress to the next mission so I spent a few hours trying to complete that mission.  Made me mad as ell.  I went to sleep, woke up the next day and finished it in one go.  Go figure...

Actually, my vote for the most tear-your-hair-out frustratingly impossible mission in the entire HISTORY of the X-wing series goes to "The Redemption Scenario." Tour of Duty 1, Operation 4. A mission of such LEGENDARY difficulty it even made it into the Expanded Universe literature as the Star Wars equivalent of the Kobayashi Maru. To this day I have flashbacks every time I read the first chapter of Rogue Squadron....

Aaahhhh... Battlehawks 1942 - what fond memories. The huge black smoke towers of the CVs after direct hits! Wow!!! TFH and SWOTL were state of the art aswell. Although I had no clue about WW2 or air warfare in general those games got me hooked! 

My first 'sim' experience was Ace of Aces on the Commodore 64 and Chuck Yeagers Aircombat. The most memorable was 'Wings' on the Amiga. I spent hours in some of the 3D missions while trying to down the last Fokker before the sun went down!!! 

My online wings I earned in Airwarrior just before finding Aces High beta back in 1999!

My first was f-14 tomcat on the atari 2600. After that it was
f15 eagle on the apple with the old floppy drive. Aop and Europe was
really good for it's time. Wish I kept x- wing vs tie fighter. Loved air warrior up til 97.
Couldn't play wwIIonline because the lag was to much for the rig. Tried warbirds and couldn't
really get immersed. Wings of prey is pretty good it's just not populated
enough right now. Falcon 3.0 was awsome when I had a 25 MHz pc back then. It came
with a thrustmaster stick that lasted for years until the rubber boot ripped.

SWOTL was the first SIM I ever flew, followed by Aces Over Europe and Aces Over the Pacific.

B-17: The Mighty 8th to that list...still the best B-17 simulator out on the market today...and still relatively good graphics

YES! yesyesyes  and more yesses... but anyone remember the long long time ago red baron game? it was made when? in 1992? or is that the same game? and what about the old single player aces high that was WWI where it was all poor graphics? (not this style game nor anywhere near) and what was the name of the old super nintendo biplane game where you flew as the pilots of the american volunteer squadron?

You are talking about the SNES game, Wings 2: Aces High.  I love that game, though I always kept getting capped strafing the bunkers.

The two games that stands out the most for me for the SNES is Operation Europe: Path to Victory and P.T.O. II: Pacific Theater of Operations 2.  Oh the fun with those games.   Basic, crude but so much fun.  In fact, I still have a working SNES with PTO II.  I just might hook it back up just to play PTO II.  I only wish I had a copy of Operation Europe: Path to Victory.

oh god. me and my dad played PTO for hours on end... it was the best game ever. and i know exactly what you mean with the bunker strafing. i even had problems completing the objectives for some of the bombing runs
