Downloaded Mcaffee AV by accident

Not sure when but somehow this AV program got on my main machine. I think it may have happened on an AICP Website. I want it gone but I'm afraid to delete it since remnants may screw up my comp.

Just format and re-install the OS and that will take care of the problem.

Does it really identify itself as "Mcaffee AV"?  Or is it McAfee? 

Either way it's probably malware/spyware, since you can't "accidentally" install most legitimate software, anti-virus software included.

I was thinking the same thing.  Could be phishing, or that new extortion approach many viruses are taking today (i.e. Install this or we will format your brain and feed your children to the rubber ducky!).

I have seen some computers that were better used as boat anchors than computers, after being the hands of some people.

Ill make you a deal skuzzy, I just built a new machine but if you send me yours I will use my new one as a boat anchor. Im only about a four hour drive from you, so ill even make the trip down there and pick it up in exchange for photo or video evidence of my boat anchor.

Lets roll those dice! Oh, and access to the secret b29 or f16 will work as well.

It's the latter. It says it's McAfee security scan.

I don't mind restoring my computer but I need this comp up and running until the 24th, which is the date of my last test. I just don't have the time right now. Taking a test on Monday as well.

McAfee Security Scans come with most Adobe products now days. There's a possibility downloading Adobe Reader got you that software.

Ah! Thanks, I feel a wee bit better. I was downloading some sample tests from an AICPA website and I think that is when it was loaded.

AAargh.  I didn't realize that.  Adobe is already just about my least favorite software company - it sounds like they've upped the ante from toolbar and cloud based backup solutions....

FYI the Foxit PDF reader has it all over adobe btw. Faster, lower overhead, and a more functions for editing the file.
