Freddie Mercury was actually a talented, literate, and clever songwriter.  He wasn't just a singer.

Gay?  Who cares.

I believe he is one of the greatest front-men ever.  I don't agree with homosexuality, but that is a personal choice/decision.  It shouldn't matter to us.

That's like Elton John--great music!  Or Judas Priest....again, great music.  What does their personal life have to do with their music?

To say Freddie was "Just a passable singer" is just ignorant.  His songwriting style of Rock/Classical mix broke new ground in music.  It is a style that is still different from anything else out there.  His personal foibles aside, he was a genuine musical genius.

I mean come on, I dare you, name another song that throws American rock, opera, choral, and baroque classical together and pulls it off as well as Bohemian Rhapsody.  Queen is kind of a genre of music all by itself, I think Styx kind of pulled off some similar stuff though not as well.

Queen story:

My buddies wife is a 6th grade school teacher, one day she passed some after school listening to an Ipod in the hallway.  She overhead the kids listening to Queen's Bicycle Race.  Another kid walks by and stops them, exclaiming, "Oh, I love this song, this is that new band Queen right?"  :lol :lol new band

So see, even youngsters think Queen is cool enough to assume it's new and hip...  :rock
