Is killing someone in a chute SOP?
« on: February 19, 2010, 11:29:46 PM »
The topic says it all.  During this FSO, 19FEB10, we (Ki-61's) were engaged by numerous hi alt F4U's.  I eventually got nailed and successfully bailed.  As I was dangling, a brave soul in a Corsair intentionally made a pass and killed me.  If this is considered "normal" behavior, I'll be more than happy to spread the hate and discontent.

My apologies if this sounds like sour grapes, but this is something I'd expect from a pre-teen nugget in one of the main arenas.

If you're over a task group I'm defending, you're butt is getting ventilated. Too many times I've seen guys in chutes distracting the already neutered AAA so their buddies can strafe unimpeded.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

The fact that they are in a chute tells me all I need to know, would not shoot a parachute regardless of the situation either.

Our SOP is to kill chutes over our Task Force. A guy in a chute can cause way too much mischief over or near a TF. Hanging around in your chute means you can still have an effect on the combat by drawing ack, giving six calls, or reporting TF location and heading. Therefore you're legitimate target to those defending the taskforce. Besides all you have to do is type .ef to safely tower out. So there's no reason to hang in your chute other than to be a PITA for your enemy and in that case you're usually going to get shot.

Nothing personal, remember nobody really dies.

Believe it or not, hanging in your chute over a field or CV draws defensive fire to the chute and away from attacking AC (chutes can't be killed by AI). This is an MA tactic appearantly and considered to be gaming the game.
However ... if you are in your chute in the middle of no where and someone straffs you, have your film running and the straffer will be publically ridiculed ... oh the shame  :noid

If floating over enemy task group or base, then you are fair game (ack draw).  All other times it's considered bad form to shoot down chutes.  Happened to me before over a friendly base and wasn't too happy about it, this was before I knew about .ef, which is what I do for now on.

it was me that killed you in the chute if it was at cv98, ack was firing at you and you could have given away TF position if left to float and sit on the water. I see chutes in FSO i shoot them, don't need an extra set of eyes for the enemy floating around.

yes i did laugh after killing you.

Copy that.  Being a relatively newcomer to AH, I was unaware of the implications of "hanging in the silk" and it's potential ramifications for either side.  I was under the impression that you had to ride it out or else there might be a penalty involved.  You can bet your sweet six that it won't happen again.  ".ef" will be utilized immediately from this point on.

Whiteman, even though we had bombers and fighters over your CBG, I can see your point about not giving away the fleet's pos.  I guess none of us were smart enough to have had the foresight to report it when initial contact was made.

Seriously, thank you all for the enlightening input on this matter and for the insight into one individual's apparent mentality.

It's understandable to get a bit miffed first time it happens. I know I was first time I died in a chute in an FSO. After thinking about it I decided .ef was my best friend if I ever bailed in any arena.

I made a few passes at a chute that was in our fight but it wasn't near a Task Group. My shots were more incentive to exit than a true attempt at shooting the chutie though.

Hope you find years of FSO enjoyment saltee, even if you're sometimes in your chute.

Lesson learned.  My temper has been throttled back to idle.  All is good due to fact that I now understand the situation and how to remedy it.  Thank you all again.

One of the problems with communicating, without eye-to-eye contact, is that things have a tendency to be taken out of context.  Based on the assumption that the "laughing" statement was most likely in jest, I offer an apology to "whiteman" for blindly returning fire.  I jumped to a conclusion that was unfounded.  My apologies, sir.

no big deal to me man, i expect the same if i'm floating over a target. If i do it in the MA it's to get a rise out of a weak minded moron.
