I was smiling too.. the first time I read that 25 years ago. ;)

Since then... countless variations: Lybia, North Korea, Iraq, Iran ... F-14, F-15, F-18... Marines.. Air Force, whatever...

the stock has been removed and what you are seeing is a padded buffer tube.  Probably to make the rifle shorter without violating the 16" barrel law
