SKUZZY
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:29:41 PM »
Perhaps you could help me out here.  I am running a forums, and I have 3 people that I have ip banned, yet they keep coming back to troll some more.  Is their a way to ban their mac addresses?   I have been pulling my hair out over the last 3 days because of this.

Thanks,
Arian

See if you can ban their entire subnet without affecting other people...could be difficult...and if they are using a proxy server, you're really gonna have some headaches.

AFAIK there is nothing "legal" you could do to scan their hardware and find their MAC addresses.

as gyrene eluded to... the sad fact of the matter is it all depends on the other person and how determined they are........ quite simply there is no way to completely ban a determined person

agree with gyrene that your best first step is to see who else from that subnet is using the forums....... if nobody then ban the whole block and hope hes not using proxies

so your forums are open to the public and do not require one to register, then setup an Username & password and then wait for approval.....kind of like they do here on the Aces High Messageboards/forums? and log everyone's IP address ( like you see in the bottom right of every post made )

All the ip's are logged, you are required to register just like on this forums.  I got it fixed for now.  I will just have to see what happens tomorrow.

Thanks for all your input,

Arian

Next time, if you want real help.........  You might want to include:

What forum software are you running and what version?

After answering that question, there would be a ton more of them.

Also.....  Unless it was SMF, why would you think Skuzzy could help you?  I run vBulletin Version 4.0.1 and as smart a man as the Skuzzynator may be, I don't think I'd be asking him for any "pointers."

BUT............Like gyrene said..... Most forum software allows you to block IP's in bulk... But that can be very dangerous.  So if a full IP was say 204.156.643.18 but the guy keeps coming back, you can try a partial like 204.156.643 or even 204.156   But the problem there becomes ALL ip's that start like that will be blocked.
