What really makes me wonder about this whole thing is the interviews and reports of the people who have been in the accidents.
In the only two cases I heard on the news this morning, BOTH people used a cell phone to call either 911 or a family member as the incident was happening. What the heck are these people thinking? How is calling someone going to help the situation, the last thing you need to do is distract yourself while behind the wheel of a run away car.
One incident the lady said she drove 100 mph for over 6 miles, while talking on the phone with her husband! Uhh, hello!? Why don't you hang up and DRIVE the car. She said she thought she was going to die (probably kill someone else too), didn't think her husband could help, but she just wanted to hear his voice. WTF PEOPLE!? This is just ignorant. And has it never occurred to these people that there are several things you can do in a run away car, like use the E-brake, down shift (even in an auto), shift to neutral, or perhaps SHUT OFF THE DAMN CAR!
Obviously you dont know the full story clearly. Yes the car accelerated to 100 mph for 6 miles while using handsfree calling system in the car talking with her husband. What your not clear on is that during this entire time she was applying the brakes with all her might and the car did not stop, along with downshifting the automatic transmission to the lower gears and with no change, she then put it in R-reverse with no change, she then turned off the ignition with no change, until it reached a speed of 33 mph did the engine finally shut down.
And you thought you had it all figured out....

The biggest problem is Toyota's denial of actually having a problem to begin with. Toyota blamed this lady for not driving the car under its description of "normal" conditions. Even though they had numerous reports of other incidents that were similar. When it finally broke to the media they wanted to blame the floor mats as a problem and completely denied anything else as electronics to blame.
Here is one of the guys that cracked the code on the "electronics" being faulty in just a few hours of testing.
