"At least they died doing what they loved"

Is it just me, or does this comment hardly ever apply to a real situation and generally sound crazy?

I noticed it in the latest killer whale thread, the 'trainer died doing what she loved'. I would bet she did NOT love getting eaten by one of the largest predators in the world.

You hear it when a pilot dies in a crash. I would bet the majority of the pilots who have died flying did NOT love crashing. In fact as a pilot I would imagine like me one of their fears was dying in a heap of burning airplane.

What about when someone dies in their sleep? You NEVER hear someone say, 'at least they died doing what they loved'. (I've heard it said about other bedroom activities though!)

Personally, I don't really want to die "doing what I loved". Anyone else?

The journey is the destination.

It's simply a way to help the living deal with their loss.

I agree 100% with you.

Even doing the horizontal mambo, I'd be pretty pissed off dying during it.

I dont want to die ever.  I know I have to.....but it would suck to die doing what I loved.  Checking out in the middle of a good nights rest sounds pretty inviting.

Ever seen someone dieing by inches in pain, stuck in a bed. No choices, unable to do anything, or change the outcome? I have, actually, in many cases, its really not that bad a way to go.

Considering the chances of being a vegetable in a hospital, or suffering in agony for weeks from cancer, it really could be much much worse.  Now some might prefer to live longer, die in there sleep. But the fact remains we have very little control over all that. Much better to live a good life, and die with your boots on.

John Denver comes to mind, along with many others.

Me I'll be happy as long as it is fairly quick.

Yeah, ive seen that.

My grandmother, when i was at the hospital visiting my grandmother, whenever my mom left the room, she just said to me over and over, i just want to die, i just want to die, i just want to die, and when my mom came back into the room she shut up and just kept quiet.

My granddad had that with his wife. She was in and out of hospital with strikes and small heart attacks.  In the end she begged him to not call the ambulance 'next' time. One night around 11pm she had another heart attack, as agreed he held in his arms til she was gone then called the ambulance. They'd been married 65 years (and the type of lovely old couple that never swears etc), I can't imagine how hard that must've been.

My oldest brother died several years ago on our family property while deer hunting with us (as a family).  We spent three days searching for the body before he was finally retrieved from the river.  He had a massive heart attack, fell over a cliff and into the swollen river.   He loved hunting, especially on that mountain.  Coroner said he was dead long before he fell, never felt a thing and most likely never even realized what was happening to him.  His vision would have begun to narrow, his senses would go (he got groggy) and he just slowly lost consiousness.

So yes...he died doing what he loved with the poeple he loved.  And as much as I hate the thought of dying (just like anyone else) I hope I go the same way.   Painlessly, no clue what is happening to me, while engaged in an activity I love.

The wife and I have living wills. We have both faced cancer as well. The thing that scares me the most is being stuck in a body that cannot function and being lucid enough to realize it. We all go down that long corridor alone, there is no reason to fear what you cannot change.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

100% correct. It is just a false hope to help deal with tragedy and help you past it. Exactly like religion. No one wants to die regardless of how they go.

Dude, don't blast peoples' religious views on here.
