Yes, I refer to Stukas as Stunkas and Spits as Shpits.

Gee...you're so cool like that.

Speaking from experience, it's actually extremely easy to identify aircraft in Aces High outside of maybe 3000 yards or so without icons. (depending on the angle at least)
You can do it at at least twice that distance but it becomes more difficult, especially depending on the terrain.

And you know they are an enemy or friendly how?

How about not naming the aircraft inbound with the model type...instead just label it as ENMY

I think this should be the standard in the MA
It is 2 Cents or .02 Dollars...NOT .02 Cents!

Well, in FSO, AvA and Scenarios limited planesets are used-
As is in the original 'Advanced Settings Arena' request-
I would never say I wanted no icons for a free-for-all arena like the MA's.

I guess I miss the Combat Arena where players could offer their own maps and settings.  It was fun doing everything from seeing who could jump a M3 off a cliff the farthest, doing battle using unusual plane sets like B24's against B24's (or jeep wars) or maps set up for Air Racing.

The small maps made for some pretty intense (and fun) 8 person battles.

If I remember correctly the only thing I couldn't change was Icon settings.  I really wanted to try that out to see how it felt.

Have you considered the real consequences of such a setting? It would lead to a lot of captured bases without any defense (= fight).

Because no one will seriously patrol bases for extended times just to see if someone will attack or not. To do so would not be "increased teamplay" but simply pretty boring.

This setting gives attackers a huge advantage, even more if the numbers are being uneven in the first place.

So... less fights, less fun, less players... if any at all.

I wouldn't suggest these settings or a variation of these settings for the MA because the MA has it's followers.  However an alternative maybe smaller arena with some of these settings might be fun to try out and if it catches on, keep it around.
