Advanced Settings Arena
« on: February 28, 2010, 12:52:31 PM »
An advanced setting arena or simply alternatives to current Arena settings once a week or month (letters are in rank of setting preference):

1. When Radar goes down, base does not flash for AIRCRAFT
Benefit - allows for jumping non-SA pilots taking off or landing or anytime, allows for taking base via air without arriving to find 20 Flacks
                - increases player communication and teamwork, no longer would a base only need protecting when it flashes
      A. for planes at any altitude (Radar is DOWN!)
      B. for planes above a minimum altitude Above Ground Level - AGL (example: 1,000 Above Ground Level -AGL)
      C. for planes above a set altitude (example 1,000 ft) no matter if you are at 2,000 ft altitude but only 700 feet Above Ground Level

2. No A/C Icon (dots would still show up on Radar circles when radar is up but not in non-radar covered areas )
Benefit - allows for more realistic Aircraft Identification skills especially in non-radar areas
                - increases player communication and teamwork, call out enemy planes when encountered
       A. NO Icons for any planes- must identify plane from radar dot, shape or colors (would have to limit plane types by country for this to work, example US-Rooks, British-Bishop, German-Knights or some version thereof) Would work well in AXIS vs ALLIES Arena
       B. NO Icons for Enemy Planes only (similar to GV icon settings for other GV's)
       C. NO Range Icons for Enemy Planes
       D. NO Plane or Range Icon for Enemy Planes - Generic Enemy Identifier Only

3. Weekly or monthly "Special" or "Crazy" Arenas involving weird or unusual setups
       Examples:

One vehicle only, such as M3's against M3's, Jeeps against Jeeps, etc
One plane only, such as Stunkas against Stunkas, B17's against B17's or Bombers against Bombers

You could address all of the above by bringing back user maps where users can start their own arena with their own settings.  You can make this for paying users only if you don't want to go back to the Free 8 player arenas.

Have you considered the real consequences of such a setting? It would lead to a lot of captured bases without any defense (= fight).

Because no one will seriously patrol bases for extended times just to see if someone will attack or not. To do so would not be "increased teamplay" but simply pretty boring.

This setting gives attackers a huge advantage, even more if the numbers are being uneven in the first place.

So... less fights, less fun, less players... if any at all.

No thank-you, the game is "gamed" enough.

Do you honestly believe that radar was the only method used to spot aircraft?

Not to mention fighter patrols, anti-aircraft gun crews..coast watchers...the list
goes on.  They don't ALL get knocked out because you hit one dinky radar site.

You would be simulating pilots who are legally blind, i.e. would be ineligible for a drivers license in the United States.

Your first two ideas seem custom made to remove fights from the game and replace them with blideside ambushes.

At least allow for planes to fly under Radar, NOE.  WWII Radar did not go down clear to the ground.

Neither does it in the main arenas in AH. Stay under 500ft AGL: NOE.

Speaking from experience, it's actually extremely easy to identify aircraft in Aces High outside of maybe 3000 yards or so without icons. (depending on the angle at least)
You can do it at at least twice that distance but it becomes more difficult, especially depending on the terrain.

That is very dependent on the hardware you have to run AH on.

On my screen, it's just a few pixels. No way for me to determine plane type or get other valuable information like attitude or heading.

As far as I'm aware there's no option to simplify the shape of a/c to improve frame rates and LoD is dependent of FoV (which you have to use in the first place..)

Yes, I refer to Stukas as Stunkas and Spits as Shpits.
