Since there is a couple of 4X4 enthusiasts on here I have a question for ya?

On the tranny gears in a manual tranny what is the better gear ratio a higher or lower ratio for first gear?

both my 70 chevy, and my 79 ford had what's called a "creeper" or "granny" gear. what that is, is a stupidly high first gear ratio. i never used it unless i had my car trailer on the back, or was climbing a really steep hill.

I looked up my jeep tranny and it has a 2.98:1 1st gear un-syncronized

is that good?

What Jeep do you have?   Gearing for Jeeps depends on a few factors.   Do you drive it to your destination?  Do you tow it?   Do you rock crawl?   But if I know the Jeep Transmission you have, it'll make my reply easier.   I don't have enough information as of now.

I grew up driving a 1949 Willys...My dad put in a 283 V8 with Chevy Posi-traction front and rear...That was a Total Monster for a 10 year old to learn how to drive. Headers, cherry Bombs...The Deer and Elk would just stand there looking at whatever the hell we were coming down the road...LOL great memories

It's the Dana 18 making the 2.98 (T-case).    You might be able to make up for some of it in the Diff's, rather than tear apart your trans and swap gears.

This is my issue I am running into. The Jeep is a 1965 DJ and the DJ models only came as two wheel drive vehicles. My Jeep has a transfer case and front differential and the tranny is from 1947, so you can see what I am dealing with.

Find a Dana 300, rebuild it (they're cheap to buy and use gears, not a chain) and mate it to a AX15 (or equiv 4 spd)   Then go to Advance Adapters and get the associated adapters you'll need and install.   Although an NV4500 (5 spd w/OD would be awesome).  Trailer it to a Driveshaft place and have them fab you custom F/R drive shafts.   $2500 for everything TOPS (about 500-1000 more for the NV4500).   Greatlakes4x4 (dunno where you live).com alone has used parts ALL OF THE TIME.

If you want, PM me and I can see what I can do to try and help you get pointed in the correct direction.

I am good but thanks anyway. I recently joined the jeep forum and there is a huge amount of info and parts available on there.

I really do not want to hack up my jeep and put in all new parts just yet.

you DO realize ya put the distributor on the wrong end right? :neener:

You DO realize that real trucks don't have spark plugs, right?

It only makes 225 hp @ 2,600 rpm at the rear wheels, but it puts out 500 ft/lbs of torque at 1,800 rpms.

Oh, and I'm getting 20 mpg.
