Question...where would this be useful outside of special events or winging with your squadmates, or maybe a buddy? Are you wanting to just randomly choose someone on your side within viewing distance to be your wingman or something like a join request?
it doesn't matter it would work anywhere the .wingman command would work just makes it so you can choose 1 or change 1 with out stopping in combat to type.
Edit ***I will humor you****
you're in the main arena, all your squad went to bed but you decided to stay on, so you go it alone.
All of a suddon a squad crosses your flight path and is 1 short and ask if you would like to link up with them.
as You agree, Over the vox channel they ask you to wing up with "WOLFMAN" as you agree to cover his wing, a massive furrball starts. You quickly type /.wingman wolfman ...no pilot found ...later you find out his callsign is wulfman but you didn't have a chance to see him visually and now that its on you don't have time to pick him out of the mix to verify his callsign spelling
because he is dead as he had no wingman to cover his 6

LOL
you might have even had the chance to send him a check 6 but you were busy typing the wrong name. I know this is kinda far out there, but you should be able to see the benefits of this regardless of the sit.
NO disrespect intended
