Intermittent USB on CH Gear duing gameplay.
« on: March 08, 2010, 05:37:02 PM »
I just got a new mother board (Gigabyte 790FXTA-UD5). Ever since I installed it, whenever I play AH, the joysticks will disconnect in mid flight for a second or so and then come back. It always seems to happen in the middle of a fight. None of my other USB devices ever disconnect in this fashion, and I am at a loss. I have tried hooking all the CH stuff to a powered usb hub. I have turned off all USB power management features. Nothing works. I am not sure if I should return this MB or what. It is an awesome board otherwise, and  I hope I can figure this out. My only other option would be to get a dedicated PCI usb card. Even then I am not sure if that would even fix the problem. I hate throwing money away trying to figure out whats wrong. I was just wondering/hoping that someone else has had this problem and figured out what it was. Thanks.

What size power supply do you have? Maybe with the new board your pushing the powersupply to hard and its dropping out your USB bus.

ive thought about that but the power supply is new as well. Its a 550 watt OZC with dual 25 amp 12v rails. I have a kill-a-watt hooked up to it and in game with crossfire graphics enabled its only pulling around 280watts

550 is pretty small, 750 is what most go for these days. Not sure of the specs on yours, it my be a good one, don't know. If you have a big video card, sound card, big duo-core cpu they can suck up some juice, especially with the game running.

i think i figured it out. I was overclocking my processor and although it ran stable in prime 95 overnight, it seems to be causing the problem, because when i set it back to stock, the issue seems to have gone away. I will need to experiment more with my over clock. I may need to up the voltage to my processor a bit.

I've thought about over-clocking...not sure what the rewards/penalties would be

On my processor, it doesn't make much of a difference. I went from 3.1 to 3.5ghz and honestly didn't notice a difference in real world speed. Benchmarks were a little better, but meh...I would rather have the stability. I am going to mess with some settings to see how stable I can get it, but If it ends up I have to put it back to stock for good, it wont bug me too much.
