Zepplins!
« on: March 10, 2010, 04:56:58 PM »
It's inevitable: Now that the WWI aircraft have arrived, people are going to want to start seeing WWI-themed special events. The obvious problem with that is there's not a great deal that can really be done with only four fighters and no bombers.

So how about Zepplins? They would be unmanned and would work sort of like a cross between a CV task group and the drones for Offline Missions. You'd set a target flight plan, and cruise altitude, (or it could default to something, like 10k or whatever) and the AI takes care of the rest. Players could jump in the defensive guns.

For Special Events one side would need to defend the Zepplin, while the other tries to shoot it down.

Although his would require an option in the hangar to load out with incendiary ammunition....

Some of THE most fun missions I had in original RB were zeppelin hunts!

I think are a must-have eventually, along with some bomber craft.

As much as I had fun today, I know I will back to the old MAs in the long run for that very reason.

Personally I'd rather not see field capture, or calling in Arty strikes, strafing the trenches, etc.

To me a Zep hunt is a very good reasonable alternative. Like the CV battles for WWII, it gives a fight a start point, with attackers and defenders.

Agreed, Ghost.

Any chance to close the fields would yield the return of the fun police.

Edited for Saxman's sanity:

I concur for use in the regular WWI arenas.  Nothing other than planes in the WWI arenas please.  However it is great idea for development to use in scenarios and the like.

I wonder if anyone has actually READ my original post?

I'm talking about Special Events.. Snapshots. FSOs. Scenarios. I said NOTHING WHATSOEVER about the "WWI Main Arenas."

I just posted to another thread in the general, but I agree with keep it simple. On the other hand, Barrage Ballons over the field would be kewl to look at, and wires, for snagging planes, sounds even cooler. Maybe make em 5-6k up to climb up to shoot em, and have em re-spawn in 10 mins. But have a few around the base, and maybe the center of the map.

I'd also like to see some eye candy in the center of the map, more detailed trenches, and craters. Maybe even a few fires.

Anyway, the WW I Area, IMHO is gonna be around as a great reliever. MUCH Better then the DA. I'm sure it may be 1-2 Arena's compared with 4, but its new, and everyone can check it out.
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.
