Went Crossfire

Took the plunge after much debate and questions from other crossfire users on overclock.net

Had a bit of trouble getting CF setup (ended up being a screw causing the mobo to bend a wee bit, causing the card to be about a 64th of an inch out of it's slot on the left) but it is well worth it, I thought my 5770 made games scream, the setup just kills each and every game that much more. I am messing with the settings for OCing them.

The next test will be playing Crysis...it plays Bad Company 2 with full AA settings, graphics, everything I could possibly turn to high.

I have heard two 5770s give better performance than a single 5870, but if you have one card, you have room to upgrade in the future with another.

The sad thing is that I'm more interested in that DualBIOS placard than the Crossfire. My old desktop has it and if I ever build another computer it needs to have it as well. Saved me many hours of work multiple times.

I'm interested to see how SLi and Crossfire have evolved. Used to be they gave a maximum 10% performance gain, but now I suppose game companies are finding was to take advantage of it. I know that with the CUDA nVidia cards you can get much more work done in BOINC.

If you check the fine print on the video charts over at Tom's Hardware, it looks like a CrossFire pair of 5770's will *slightly* outperform a single 5870 at certain tasks by a slim margin.  For about $100 less.

How much faster/better looking/greater is Crysis on CF? I am playing the heck out of MWLL at the moment but experience FPS drops in intense fights - maybe CF could cure this?

I see a pretty good jump in a few games I play. If both cards are overclocked I've heard you can get up to 45% performance increase at times.

Yeah those are what I looked at. My next system I'd probably be looking at a 5900 series card. Only because that'll be 4-5+ years from now and by then it'll be cheap.

Nobody can resist the huge pair of overheating goodies. They're huge, round, and they bounce. What else can one want?

Well I have 2 9800GTX+ cards SLI'd and I tested the game out with and without the 2nd card SLI'd.

With just 1 card on test I was able to get a steady 92 FPS. Not bad if I say so myself.

With the cards SLI'd I was able to get a constant 148 FPS. Now I'm not a mathamatician but I do believe that's aprox a 42% framerate increase. Now my next option that I wanna do is overclock my CPU and vid cards, but my first task just so I don't mess up is to do a complete backup of my files I want to keep.

Till then I will let you guys know what happens.. Either I fry my comp or I get a little more OOmph outta it.

Dual Bios is a feature of Gigabyte MB's........ not sure if any other MB manufacturer's offer such a feature.....

the pic, Spikes posted, looks like it is a Gigabyte MB, with the Dual BIOS and the UltraDurable 3 2oz copper PCB's.. these MB's are HEAVY to the feel from the added Copper in them.....

on an added note: My Mom recently upgraded her PC, and she has a Gigabyte MB, the strangest thing was in the MB Installation manual it said to run the Matched Memory in "Un Ganged" Mode for better performace in stead of running it in "Dual Channel" Mode........ I thought that was backwards, have not had time to confirm it yet......

If I'm not mistaken, ASUS also has Dual BIOS on some of its mobos as well.

I figured as much, but I haven't been able to make myself spend on a desktop ever since I built the last one back at the end of middle school. I have a laptop with much better performance, but it's really awkward to play a flight simulator on it...it's still hard to justify a new desktop.

thought I read somewhere that you had to disable V-sync in crossfire..is that correct?
