Operation Marita Frame 2 Axis AAR
« on: March 20, 2010, 04:50:19 PM »
The plan for the night was executed near to perfection that we could do.  All Axis pilots deserve a well pat on the back. :salute

On the defensive side, we kept the enemy from totally destroying 5 out of 6 airfields.  A4, A43, A45, A111, and A49 only sustained minimal damage with the loss of a few hangars and some strats.  Well done!!! :salute  A54 took the brunt of the Allied attack from several waves of enemy attack virtually leveling the field.  A big  :salute to The Unforgiven with 5 pilots who valiantily defended A54.

On the offensive side, we leveled 3 enemy airfields and moderate damage to 3 others.  A111 and A115 were two seperate strikes with large squads flying both Ju-88's and Me-110C's succeeding with moderate damage to both airfields.  A58 received 2 seperate strikes from 2 different squads and received moderate damage also.  A38, A31, and A34 wee completely leveled.  A big  :salute to those squads.

I would like to thank the squads who flew I-16's for both defense and offense.  You guys had the toughest jobs to do with them short legs.  A big salute to I-16 squads that were wiped out performing their duties to the bitter end.

I would like to thank the squads or pilots that flew the Ju-88's and Stukas.  Air Raiders did an outstanding job with their Stukas at A38. :salute  The Ju-88 squads did a great job with hitting 2 targets also. :salute

Except for LCA and VF-15 who flew their own missions by themselves, I would like to thank the squads who worked together in executing a series of complex plans to take the fight to the enemy.  I wrote the mission orders in a way to allow most of the squads plenty of wiggle room in making tactical decisions over enemy airfields.  The plan had a high degree of risk in many ways and I'm completely satisfied with the squads following them and achieving that level of success we did.

From Ghostdancer's earlier post,
Will ask them to post it. I have already made my pass through the raw logs and the air to air war was exceedingly close (allied 760 pts to Axis 745pt). However the Axis were much more successful or consistent in bombing their targets (1557 pt to 1325pts). Complete break downs later.

As for the front the Yugoslavs stopped the German advance out of Bulgaria and Albania. So the Prilep pocket continues to hold out. The allies in the east have decided to abandon the Aliakmon line and to withdraw toward Larissa (central Greece) but have not withdraw from Florina yet (A39). Leaving a corridor for the Yugoslavs to retreat through.

The Italians have made gains in the west.

Overall the British and Greeks are making an orderly withdrawal. The rest of Yugoslavia has fallen except for Belgrade that is under siege. The Brits and Greeks expect the Yugoslav government to surrender any time now but are trying to entice Yugoslav military units in the south to fight and to possibly withdraw back into Greece itself and bolster the new defense lines they are trying to establish from Arta in the west, Trikala in middle, and Larissa in the east (V72, A31, A33).

we held our own in the air and dominated the airfield destruction.  This chalks one up for the Axis. :salute

Great job everyone!!!! :salute

A54 was our primary target as plane.  Being the only large airfield axis had, we put our biggest squadrons to hit it.  A4 too was our primary and knew that it will be tough to hit with only one area that we could go in.  I suggested that we should hit A4 from the north where i predicated that the axis was looking for us south of A4.   But concerns was how long it would take.

Kuya good AAR.  Always good to see how the planning CIC saw the plan play out.

The 325th VFG had the task to hit A38 and A58 with our JU-88's.  BIG <S> to the 49th they cleared and held the air open over A38 all night.  That action allowed for 2 complete strikes to A38 with 1 of our JU-88's making 3 run's.  Had the airspace at A38 not been held open the scores would have been very different because the real damage came in the 2nd strike.

As a contrast the airspace at A58 was heavy with enemy AC and we lost 3 JU-88's with very little damage to the airfield.  No 2nd strikes were attempted because of the defenses at A58.  Remaining JU-88's were shifted to a late frame A38 strike.

The defenders at A4 only numbered about 10 birds between two squads. We WERE looking South to Southeast but I thought it was taking too long and thought it might be a good idea to check North and just as we did you guys came in from the SE. We would have run into you a sector or so out on our next rev had we not gone North at that time. No matter anyway as there were WAY too many of you for us to stop. I took an oil hit to my 109 from one of the Ju88s and sparred with some of your escorts until my mill quit and fought through a gliding rolling scissors to a ditch short of A4.

Great orders AKKuya.. :salute
WD40 along with the Hellcat FG were tasked to get  CaP over A31 In our 110C's . The Air Raiders followed  behind  in the Stukas.
We engauged a lonley Hurri scout just North of 31 and then we engauged a squad of brewsters. We had a better altitude thande the brewsters plus the Hellcat FG's was above us.  All enemy were either killed, or pushed down to the deck.   The Air Raiders then arrived at the perfect time to drop 31 hangers. Remaining 110's then strafed dwn  remaining goodies. I think 1 hanger was left. Stampf said he got it later in the round.
 We all rearmed  at 35 and went to A34.  We had bombs for 34 and droppped some more hangers bv4 getting killed by some brewsters.
                   Thanks WMills, Ponyace, for great teamwork on the vox and text channels...  :salute

Axis must have diffrent BDA standards then most.  :O On the first pass A4 lost all but one of her target hangars and a good number of secondary targets were reduced. Second pass to egress removed the last hangar and more secondaries. As Drano said before the fighters were out of position when we made our bomb run. The few fighters that did intercept made good attacks and managed to get a couple of kills.  Escort run by Jaxxon did an outstanding job of stripping the fighters that did show up and giving VMF101 a almost untouched run at the target both times. Looking forward to more of the same next week.

Also A54 was the same being totally leveled.
By the way, how are the points counted for air bases?  For instance on field A4 the objectives say it's worth 396 points.  Are they extra points added on if the base is destroyed or is it simply a total of all objects added together.  It should be noted because the orders were compiled assuming that they were points for taking the base down.  Extra effort being put on the 2 largest bases to ensure they would get the most points and that the VH's weren't damaged at the other bases with POW's.

Plenty of stuff were destroyes at the airfields.  The way you assess them is right clicking on the base to see the airfield status.  Then look at the categories being enabled or disabled.  Troops, Fuel, Ords, and Hangars were mostly Enabled after the strikes.  A54 showed most categories as Disabled.

Those assesement are just general from looking at the big picture.  The CM's can determine the specifics of the damage at each airfield to weigh the scores.

The point value represents if the base was totally destroyed. It is a simple compilation of all valid objects at a base.

As stated the VH at all the small base targets for the Allies was off limits. This dropped the value of those bases from 288 to 246 (They were listed incorrectly as 288 on the objectives). The allies did not bomb any VH at any small base. The VH was only valid at the A54 (Large base) and A4 (medium base).

The Axis had a total of 1944 points they could earn through bombing.

The Allies had a total of 1952 points they could earn through bombing.

ALLIED BOMBING RESULTS
A4 = 91.9% (364 out 396)
A113 = 7.7% (19 out 246)
A43 = 51% (126 out 246)
A45 = 28.5% (70 out 246)
A49 = 71.9% (177 out 246)
A54 = 99.6% (570 out 572)

As you can see the Allies crushed two axis bases but had a wide spread of results on the other four. Overall they destroyed 67.9% of all their assigned targets when pooled together.

Allies also damanged the the towns of A4 (7 town objects destroyed) and A113 (2 town objects destroyed). They were not valid targets so no points scored for them (basically just a waste of ordinance).

AXIS BOMBING RESULTS
A111 = 51.9% (150 out 288)
A115 = 81.1% (234 out 288)
A31 = 83.9% (332 out 396)
A34 = 96.4% (382 out 396)
A38 = 100% (288 out 288)
A58 = 59.8% (172 out 288)

Like the allies the Axis crushed two bases but had more consistent bomb results across the other 4 targets (or less of a spread of results). Overall they destroyed 80.1% of all their assigned targets when pooled together.

For many reasons, The Unforgiven was understrength in defending A54.  We did what we could and I am proud of some of our pilots taking down bombers with I-16's.  We had the 4 7.62 mm guns (twice the firepower of a Fokker D7) and I laid bullets across 3 Ju 88's.  Then  the 109E's showed up.  Chased one of those down and got hit sprites till he out ran me.  Got killed on a Great passing shot from another 109 (which had cannon).  And for all that, hits on 4 planes, I didn't even get an assist.  Next time, we are gonna open the window and throw beer bottles at you!  :airplane:

:lol I was wondering what happened to our stash of empties at A49? I was hoping to toss molotav's at the B-25 next frame since the bb guns didn't work.
