I really hate to get into this, because at all but the higher alts the advantage can still be negated by taking your time attacking bombers. However, at high alts, I believe this is the reason they are pretty near impossible to take down.

When steering a bomber from the gunner position, there is no loss of speed. Even complete circles, at about an 80 degree bank, the plane is losing neither speed nor altitude.

A short example in film is posted here, you can sit in the cockpit and watch the airspeed and altimeters, all steering is done from the gunner positions.

It's just me flying in offline mode, then I went back and looked at the film from the cockpit to observe the alt/airspeed.

The autopilot only manipulates the control surfaces, so a pilot could fly the plane with exactly the same performance manually anyway. The actual B-17G FM is the real fault here, if there is one.

Excuse my ignorance, I don't fly buffs much, but how do you fly a buff from a gunner position? Not being a smart prettythang, I honestly dont know.

Here's something I think must be wrong.

The test pilots at Boscome Down said it required a 140lb pull to recover a Lancaster from a 300mph IAS dive at +1.5G, and it took them a while too.

In the AH Lancaster, at the same speed you can easily pull up to +3G or more real quick and break the wings off.

Just how strong are these buff pilots in AH?

Good point, I think that the "pilot" imput should be the same all speeds, ie giving less control imput as speed/forces increase. The control surfaces are hydrolics, but not boosted by the hydrolics.
