I wouldn't put much stock in the Mayan doomsday prophecies considering the actual doomsday of the Mayan civilisation was sometime during the 8th and 9th centuries when their civilisation fell. They missed by several hundred years.

Actually, they never even CALLED it the end of the world (modern-day survivors of the Mayan culture are annoyed as hell about that artificial meaning applied to it).

What would a bunch of Mayan know that we do not? they smoked better drugs?
Every Golly-geen culture on this earth has or had a doomsday prophecy with hundreds of possible dates depending on your interpretations.

Reread my post. It wasn't EVEN a doomsday prophecy to begin with. I don't know WHERE the hell the idea came from, but it was NOT from the Maya.

I wonder if any of the doomsday'ers stopped to think that maybe the Mayan's made a calendar to extend 2000 thousand years after their existence and perhaps they thought to themselves, "Ugh, I'm tired.  Do we really need to make this calendar longer?  Let's just end it here on the winter solstice and call it done."

I'm half looking forward to it. First off there's going to be a lot of 'End of the World' parties. The 21st is a Friday so it will work very well.

I was just thinking about how much everyone believes in the doomsday belief, and I have to say that maybe because everyone believes in this theory is the reason why the world might end in 2012.

Hear me out, lets visualize this, if no one paid attention to the 2012 theory then most likely nothing will happen, the year goes by without a second thought and everyone goes about their day. But however this will not happen, with the thought that the end is near highly powered people who do believe in this theory perhaps might not care about their actions, after all the end is near...why care?

Perhaps it's not the events themselves that might end the earth, but possibly the power of belief in it. With millions in belief of 2012, that's millions with moral hazard, millions that may not care about their actions...these millions themselves might be the cause of the end of the earth. If high powered leaders take actions that they would not normaly take due to the belief then perhaps there might be truth in this theory.

The theory itself may by a cover of an underlying message, if you think it will happen...then it will. The closer 2012 comes the more panic arrises, the crazier people become...they loose control and start doing what ever it takes to survive. Chaos arrises in the masses, neighborhoods turn into war zones, congress unable to act in any motions, nations abroad follow, world chaos inssues. All because they believed.

I do not believe in the theory, but however I am terrified by what I just stated above...with millions in belief, they themselves are what they must fear.
Why am I terrified? Because events are controllable, people are not.

Thoughts?

This sounds like a bad Keanu Reeves movie.  Barf.

Actually, they never even CALLED it the end of the world (modern-day survivors of the Mayan culture are annoyed as hell about that artificial meaning applied to it).

Yup, the Mayan calender in question (they had several) is calender on a 5,100 year cycle based off of their astronomical observations.  All this means is that on 12-21-12 there will be some sort of astronomical alignment which was important to the Mayans, and the calender will start over.  For the Mayans it means the beginning of a new age.  It holds no real importance to anyone else unless perhaps you are a practicer/believer of astrology.

It's really just a calender rolling over.  Do we predict doomsday every Dec. 31st when our Julian calender rolls over?...   Of course not.  But somehow because this calender is a much, much longer cycle a few whackos have predicted doomsday when it rolls over.  People have been predicting the end of the world as we know it for thousands of years, someday one of them may be right, but it will be pure luck.

Large meteors have hit this planet before and will again but I doubt those that believe they can predict the randomness of the cosmos.
