The real life designer of the N1K was who?

I was told it was Howard Hughes, but I can't find info on it.

There is an N1K at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. Pretty good museum, Lots of  "cats' too.

HH built a racing plane that was like a zero in the 1930s.
