Here is a picture of the Maya as a late war Takao class cruiser:

You can see that she lacks the #3 turret and has increased AA capabilities.

Armament...........10 x 8"/50
...........................8 x 5"/40 DP
...........................up to 66 x 25mm AA
...........................16 x 24" TT

Takao:

Atago:

Chokai:

Janusz Skulski's book, "The Heavy Cruiser Takao", would provide an excelent resource for modeling and detailing the ship.
The Heavy Crusier Takao

This ship is, in my opinion, a much, Much better looking class than any US, UK or German heavy cruiser class.  It is also, arguably, the best class of heavy cruiser to see action in WWII.

Please pick this one.  Lets not have only American ships.

The Japanese where famous for their effective heavy cruisers. How would you say it stacks up with a British(london?) ,German (Hipper) or US(Baltimore?) class CA? as far as polygon count would go? these things are not aircraft, they have very complex shapes. Polygon count would probably be signifigantly different for each.
Going by that measure the Japanese might be the worst.. British the best.
I dont know what the limitations are on the game. I had a thread along time ago about ship choices and I think I chose the Japanese heavy cruiser as ...

But how would the majority of the playing community (people from U.S.A.) feel taking off from a Japanese carrier? That might be a concern and thus an American carrier will probably be modelled. (This is just my speculation.)

If there wouldn't be any national markings on the carrier though, a Japanese carrier could be implemented instead and many couldn't tell the difference.

SageFIN,
As so many have pointed out whenever a German aircraft is equated to being a Nazi aircraft, AH is a game that models equipment.  Equipment does not have a leaning.

As far as Carriers go, while I wouldn't have a proplem with a Japanese carrier, I would prefer HTC to model an Essex class carrier.

But because we already have F4U's flying with N1K2s against Spitfires I see no problem with having an Essex class carrier being escorted by a Takao class heavy cruisers and Fletcher class destroyers.

Later on, maybe HTC will have the time to do a Shokaku or Akagi class carrier, a Pensacola oe New Orleans class heavy cruiser and a Kagero/Yugumo class destroyer.  Then the fleets could be set to either American or Japanese.

For now though, I'd like to see:

Essex class carrier (American)
Takao class heavy cruiser (Japanese)
Fletcher class destroyer (American)
PT-Boat (American)

Hey Brits, notice that only the U.S. and IJN Pac war fleets are being talked about?
What about the U.K and Italian fleets? The Italian fleet had damm good boats, bad (politicaly O.K.) top officers.
For "uber boats" the Italians had almost fitted out a flattop, the Aquila.

Fleet Aircraft Carrier

Displacement: 28,350 tons full load
Propulsion: Steam turbines, 8 boilers, 4 shafts, 151,000 shp, 30 knots
Crew: 1200 plus 243 air crew
Aircraft: 50+

go to:

for more.

If it has one turret less, that accounts for four twin 8' turrets, so the armament would be 8x8'/50

Just nitpicking

You are right in a way RAM.

I did kind of misrepresent the stats.  Disn't mean to though.

Those stats are for the early war Takao class ships.  Unless I'm quite mistaken, this number would be larger on the late war Takao's:
