Why bothering CAMOFLAG?
« on: October 16, 2000, 05:42:00 AM »
People worked hard on field-camos, of Tanks,Aircrafts,Ships,Infantries...
ICONs just make all those ZERO

Ah, I dont mean to complain ... I just wish to reduce the range and effects of ICONs...

To a pilot the ID range is how much? From head? From rear?
Remember how Mr SAKAI lost his left eye?
In RL combat planes dont fly with a banner

Excuse me if you guys think I'm whining

imag, search thru this bbs for some other threads on this subject. They are quite large, and cover the subject in depth.

It basically comes down to the issue that our current graphics/monitors do not give the same amount of visual information that real life does, therefore the need for icons.

Verm cut right to the chase.  Unfortunately their needed.  Even if I don't like them.

There's also something else to think about.  Because AH allows a team to fly any plane LW with GB, SU with US...how would u identify friend or foe?  And if you say tag only friendly..well then that again takes away from the no tags experience.

I wish that they could put a ting of colour on the aircraft that stays with range so you could have an idea of nationality without the Icon.

AGREEED but:
I mean let AI do IFF,but the player make TYPE identification.

Suppose this situation:

You are at 30K in a 202 and you see one little spot at 11 ,about 25k alt., 10K away.
Several mins later it looks larger and keeps level... and you guess it painted GREEN.
You are fast and in 20 seconds entering gun range, and NOW:
(ICON with plane type)
GGGGEEEEEZZZZZ, a B26, my 202 is no match for him... lucky enough I'd time and space to bug out.
  OR
HEHE, Its NEON BANNER is telling me that it is a C47... another KILL... Rolling in...!

SEE? 2 different reactions  to make...
without showing the TYPE more personnal SKILLs are involved... challenging...

*****************************************
I'd wish the plane type appears ONLY when target is WITHIN gunnery range?
In my first post on this thread, I meaned to say the same thing.
*****************************************

Oops, too bad I'm just a new user here and although I've printed tons of BBS articles to read ... Thats not enough

Thanks for pointing it out

I understand the need for icons in the pork arena, but at least give us the option to turn icons off in arena settings for h2h and scenarios .

I can ID a WWII fighter at a far graeter range in reality than I can, minus icons, in AH.  This is because I am not cramming a 45% section of the world into a low res 15% chunk of my vision.

That is why we have icons.

I do agree in principal though, they make it too easy to spot aircraft.

I'm not fond of the idea of killing a red F4U-1C in my green Spitfire MkIX.

If the settings are different for Enemy vs friendly(say range at 1 mile on friendly, 2 mile on enemy), the effect is the same as having them equal.  i.e.  If you see a dot at over a mile(using the above settings) and there is no icon, then you know it is an enemy, same as if the icon where there.
