Question for the P-38 guys.
« on: April 05, 2001, 03:45:00 PM »
Did the P-38L ever carry 2 2000lb bombs?  If so, would that eliminate the 10 rockets from its ordanance?

If not the P-38L, which P-38 carried 2 2000lb bombs?

P-38 could carry 2 2k bombs and 14 rockets. Dont know what version or if it was a field mod. Will look for the pic I have of it.

Then isn't it a given that we should have that loadout available for the P-38L in AH?

Would giving this loadout to the P-38L adversely affect the usageof the B-26A and the Ju88A-4?

Hell yes, give Ju-88 also MG/FF under the nose

If it was possible loadout then we should have it (imo of course).

an additional thought that HTC may consider when choosing to give the P-38L 2000lb bomb carrying capability...

it will increase the number of bomb laiden p38s wallowing in at low altitude on bomb runs towards targets (a dive from above 10k ussually ends up compressing)

more capable p38 jabo = less hispano chog jabo plinking tanks w 20mm.

I think that P38F and later had a 2000 LB hard point on each wing.

does anybody else out there have the warbird tech series books on the P-38? not only are the 2 2000lbs bombs standard on H,J, and L (not too sure about E and F models, but in that book they show P-38s with mods in the field where they carried 2 2,000lb bombs and 4 300lb bombs making the total bomb load 5,200lbs. they had a 300lb bomb on either side of the 2,000lb bomb and you had to drop the 2,000lb bomb first.

Aye, but fields mods I think dont count in AH. its got to be factory made.

The first P-38s in Europe were P-38Fs designed to carry two 300 gallon drop tanks with operation Bolero in mind. This was in 1942.  Conservatively, that calculates to 2 X 1,800 Lbs worth of fuel.  Takeoff weight more than 19,000 LBs.
