Some Il2 questions
« on: April 11, 2010, 04:06:38 PM »
Hello Folks,
I flyed these days some sorties with the Tank killer Il2. But i didnt't have the feeling that it is a can opener.
Ok... im not the best sharpshooter in the game (rather hitting the target by pure luck or by mistake  :D)
The Story: I hunted a T-34 and poured about 80 canon shells in the can - nothing. I used 4 rockets on it and im convinced i did make 2 hits - nothing. I dropped 4 bombs on that monster, and two eggs exploded right by the side of the tank - nothing.
What im doing wrong?

Hello, and welcome to the game/forum. I am no IL2 guy myself, but the bombs aren't worth much unless you either drop all 4 together (type into text buffer .salvo 4) in my opinion.
The T34 is a tough tank to kill, possibly the toughest with the IL2, because of it's sloped armor. You need to attack it from a high 6-oclock position, almost diving straight down, and aim right behind the turret.

I disagree with the bombs if your good with im they kill very well. I get most of my gv kills with those 4 bombs. I have never gotten a kill with the rockets and the 37mm is good for t34 I suggest you first track the tank giving it that lop sided tilt then coming in from the tracked side and plugging the top full of death now that you have negated some of that slope.

This is what i do with the IL2, 1st I have a dot on my moniter that I put there with a dry erase maker. That way I can pinpoint my shots, otherwise i'd just be guessing where my rounds are going. 2nd, i'll climb to around 2k and circle my target and line up in his 12 and 6 oclock position. Once i'm in the dive, (about 70 degrees very steep), i'll begin to fire as soon as my dot of a gunsite touches either the front or back (depending on which way i'm coming from), and light him up from one end to the other. 99% of the time this results in a kill for me. I don't carry ord as it just bogs the plane down. I like to keep light so I can move out of harms way faster if need be.

Lighten up Francis

It is all about hit location and angle.  Not having film, I don't know what if anything you were doing wrong.  High angle, fire at the flat spot on the top of the engine compartment.

As others have said, the T-34 tends to be one of the tougher tanks to kill with cannon only.  Had you been hunting a Panzer, Wirbel or Osti, you would have seen more of a can-opener.   :D

As for bombs, again without film it is hard to say.  Sometimes it seems terrain features prevent the blast from hurting a tank (hitting the ground above them on a slope, for example), or perhaps your bombs didn't land quite as close as you think.  They are only 100kg bombs, not 500 or 1000 lbrs, so your bomb would need to be closer to do any damage.

10-12 rounds from the IL-2(big gun pack) behind the turret in the engine will usually get a kill. I salvo 4 bombs, delay 0.1 better than all together IMO Rockets are useless unless you're really lucky, but I keep trying.  :aok

Steep angle of attack (60+degrees), fire at rear deck right behind turret.  Oh, and I like to get within 400 yards to make sure that I do not miss.  3-4 accurate shots is better than spraying and praying your entire AP load.  It takes practice, and you will auger a lot getting comfortable with the attack angle.  You know you got it right, when the tank blows up and you can here the bottom of your plane scrape by the burning hulk of your enemy! :aok

T34 have to get a certain angle or else it just bounces off the slanted armor

The PTAB was the real tool that made all models of the IL-2 the superlative tank killer.  If these were accurately modelled, GV players would learn just how vulnerable tanks were against PTAB armed IL-2s.

1st I have a dot on my moniter that I put there with a dry erase maker.

Tell you what I do to help with aiming with the IL-2.  Jump in the rear gunner seat and put the cursor over the dot in the rear gunner's sight and lock the mouse.  When you get back in the pilots seat you should have a center point.
