Monitor not working with new Geforce 275 GTX ?
« on: April 14, 2010, 05:29:50 PM »
I bought a new Nvidia Geforce 275 GTX and i uninstalled the drivers for the previous card, shut  down the computer, and took out the old graphics card. Then i proceeded to put in the new card  which seems to fit perfectly, but when its all hooked up and the card itself is running with power, i cant seem to get the monitor to realize that it is there and the monitor will not come out of power saving mode. I have tried turning the monitor on and off, pulled the card back out and tried the old card to make sure it wasnt something i had done during installation. The old card works fine, i just cant seem to get the monitor to responed to the new card.

Any thoughts anyone?

Ty in advance.

That card may be dead if it works with the other card fine. I had a similar problem when my motherboard died, my monitor would not come out of power save, tested both GPUs on another PC and they still worked, mailed it back to the company, re-hooked it up, and my PC worked just like it used to.

DVI or analog? Make sure the monitor is pickingup the right input? I.e. sometimes you can choose on the monitor which mode it's receiving. Also, if both are DVI, try just plugging into the other card slot.

The other option would be failure of the card itself to run. Does it sound like windows loads properly? You get the POST beep, startup sounds, HD churns, like loading Windows?

Or does it just hang there and never boot?

Might be an incompatibility with the motherboard and the card, or a lack of power to run it. Possible, but make sure the monitor is hooked up first before you start sweating. Many a time I've upgraded a PC and had to do the guessing game of "which vid card port is primary" and "which monitor mode is analog, which is digital?" to get it right.

I like to start simple.

Did you plug the power connector to the card?

Are you sure you've got enough amps and watts in the PSU to run the card?

Did you double check that the card was properly seated and the monitor cable was plugged in tightly?

Did you try the other monitor output on the card?

Did you try a different monitor cable?

Do you have a second PCIe x16 slot you can try?  Did you?

Did you try to install the drivers to see what would happen?

Did you verify that the fan spins up on the card?  If not it could overheat very quickly.

If none of that works it's likely a dead card.

I had one that I had to push the card in so hard I thought I would crack the motherboard. I thought I had it in 4 or 5 times and finally got ticked off and really gave it a push and that did the trick.

Twintail make SURE that video card is perfectly inserted...I thought my second 5770 was dead until I realized a screw on my mobo was causing it to bend a wee bit, making a small bit (probably 1/64th) of an inch out of the socket on the left...

Does the mobo have onboard video?  Make sure bios didn't reset to onboard.

So to sum up for twintail, it's 1 of 2 problems.

Either: The card is working but not communicating to the monitor

Or: The card is not working at all, so the monitor has no signal to display.

Many of the suggestions here are all geared to the trouble shooting step of determining if it's a card problem or a communication problem.

I feel it may have to do with my power supply, it calls for 575+ watts and my power supply is only 400. Altho the old cardf does not seem to work now at this time even though it was  before im sure i will get back in eventually even if it means having to get a new system becuase it is almost overdue as it is. upgrading over n over seems to be a waste, if the power supply doesnt do it i may just take my newer parts and set them aside untill i can afford a new machine maybe a little more up to standards of the time.

PSU will most definitely be the cause.

Currently running Q9300, three disk drives, water pump and four banks of memory and a Radeon 5850 with a 430W Antec PSU (for how long, I do not know). Of course it depends on how much amps the lines in PSU are able to feed to its 12V lines and there are differences between manufacturers, but boy am I happy I invested in a decent PSU a few years ago.

There is probably no point in getting a big prettythang power with big bucks, especially if you cannot afford one ATM, but one from 500-600W range with good efficiency coefficient and ability to feed lots of amps to 12V line.

I always recommend buying a good and a tad over-sized PSU if the comp is going to be built and upgraded along its lifespan, and these new display adapters seem to be power hogs even if their chip technology is quite modern and the power consumption is relatively low compared to the amount of stuff they have inside, so I do not expect the power consumption to diminish in the near future. So even if the new PSU does not necessarily solve the problem it is not a needless investment.

Sounds like you found the problem.  Hopefully it didn't kill something when you tried running that high-powered card.  Underpowering like that can kill the PSU, the video card and/or the motherboard which could explain why the old card no longer works either.

Twintail:

Isn't the 275 an SLI card?  Two slots?  You have to turn SLI on in the bios to get it to recognize it.  I can't remember if that card is SLI....pretty sure it is but it has to be switched on in the BIOS prior to boot.

NEVERMIND...I checked...the SLI is the 295....disregard.
