Need a new computer
« on: April 17, 2010, 05:56:39 PM »
I have a 7 year old Dell that pretty much can't handle the game anymore. Only have 512 of Ram and a 64mb Nividia card in it. After checking some prices on memory and video cards I think it is better to get a new computer. Here is one I am looking at Squadies suggested I post here to get some good feedback. I need to keep the price down as much as I can. I only play AH and do routine house stuff with my home PC. I have a good monitor and sound system so just need the CPU

Seek out Tildeath. Wherever he may be.

last time I talked to him, he was on his way back to Haiti, he had to come back to grab some tools/gear/stuff to rebuild/setup a network/internet type infrastructure ..to where most of it had been wrecked by the earthquake that hit....

he was supposed to be gone for 4 to 6 months if IRCC......

I know I have his contact info somewhere, and he posted , I think on his business site his warranty contact info incase of emergencys......

hope this helps

Twister2,
best thing to do is post your money limit and an idea of what all you need and what all you might be reusing ( think you posted you would reuse your monitor, speakers?, how about your keyboard & mouse? )

this would help others help you in finding you a good buy or parts for a good build perhaps? if you are into building your own ( isn't that hard to do, and is a good learning experience )

hope this helps

TC hit the nail on the head. Give us a price you're looking to spend and we can see what we can do. Home building is usually cheaper than any buy...even ibuypower.

Allrighty then. I should be able to use everything off my Dell except the CPU. The keyboard and mouse are fine and should transfer over to a new CPU same with speakers and monitor. I am wanting to spend less then $600 closer to $500 would be better. I however am very limited on time and don't think I can make a home build happen. Thanks for the replies.

Dells can be a pain to upgrade because the motherboard is designed with the quickest construction time with the smallest amount of overhead possible.

If you're going to buy a shelf PC like 'iBuypower', make sure you check their homepage first. Often, Newegg will tack on an additional 5% in the price to make a profit.

Twister, the problem with dell is they build them cheap. In a new build, almost any type of decent video card is going to need a better power supply. 600 is possible...but I hope you aren't expecting to play the game maxed out. I will look around and see what I can find for you prebuilt wise.

Understood on the limited time, many people here just mention it because you save more money and get some better quality parts.

Twister, go to iBuypower's website and upgrade the power supply, memory and video card...everything they put in it for that bargain basement price is low end. It's the front page bargain unit that you can customize. If you can part with $700 to $800 you can turn that system into something pretty decent.

He could get somethng from a private company mid size case. Budget is a budget. 500 to 600 is not the best of course, just buy a system that would have a upgrade path.
A budget system like the one posted by spikes is a heck of a upgrade compared to a 7 year old computer.

That one is just a fixed link...he had a c/p error on his. It is definitely a good machine...I just think better can be done in the videocard/PSU area. Obviously building it yourself is always best but some people don't have the time. TD is missins out on a lot of business here.

Any pre built system could always be picked apart.
For the 500 to 600, a build yourself machine is going to be better. There are down sides to buld yourself also. Like a warranty, a person buys machine and it goes bad the person can take it to get fixed. Build yourself your going to fix yourself also. There is pros and cons on each side.

The only thing I suggest to twister is I think before I puchased one I would look for a upgrade path for down the road.

The one hes looking at looks like there is a path. Has ddr3, someday could always put a AM3 faster CPU and a faster video card in it. Hopefully the PSU would be enough power.
