Mom's email not working
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:09:00 AM »
Hopefully someone has ran across this problem. Mom's carrier is AT&T. For some unknown reason her e-mail started generating errors when sending e-mails. She asked for help from AT&T but they decided her e-mail program needed deleted. Now I knew she had some e-mail problems so I did a fresh install of the OS on her computer. Reset her e-mail account to AT&T specs and had the same problem after all that time and effort. I think it's something to do with At&t. They say it's not. I even looked at my settings, which is AT&T as well, and then put the same settings on her computer. Same issue.

My head is spinning here. I wonder if it's not her DSL modem or maybe AT&T switched her line to U-verse. Which requires a different modem. Then again is it the DNS. Heck I don't know. She can get on the internet and receive e-mail. I know about that about the same time she started having problems my send was down as well for about a day.

Any thoughts?

They can't switch a line to Uverse without her having someone come into the house to do the install.

I'm no expert but I've having trouble understanding exactly what you're asking.  What program does your mom currently use to check her e-mail?  Is it something like Outlook, Windows Live Mail, or another program?

It would also be helpful in telling us what the error message says when your mom tries to send email.

Error # 0x800CCC0F, She can receive but not send. I just spent more than an hour with At&T and that resolved nothing. All the settings are correct. She's using Outlook.

If you use a firewall, check its settings.
Firewalls such as routers, firewall software and even some Anti-Virus Suites fall into this category

Try creating a new outlook profile and setup the email with correct settings.  If it works with new profile, then your old profile is corrupt.  Outlook does have a fix profile button somewhere, but it doesn't fix it most of the time.

Thanks Kermit, I was thinking about those very same things. I did turn off windows firewall. I don't have a router but she has a modem. I wonder about the settings there. I also thought about her setting up a new profile. I'll try that first.

check the modem to see if it's a hybrid modem/router.

I was thinking about that. It only has a single computer connection. Could it still act as a router?

That is a great idea!

Addendum: I tried it on my computer and it worked. Should I try a new DSL modem or maybe check the settings on her modem?

Don't add account to another computer until you have done a thorough anti-virus check... did you ask at&t if the send outbox has been active? Reason is, had a buddy that this was happening to, found out through Comcast he was sending over 100 emails per session, and he was getting timed out because receivers were blocking his "Spam".

We completely restored the computer. There is nothing on it. We've also been in contact with AT&T and they found nothing unusual.

This weekend I'm taking my spare computer over there. Hooking it up to her line. If it doesn't work then its her modem or line. If it does work then its her computer. If it is her computer I may leave the spare computer over there for her to use while I work on hers.

But my spare computer is my gaming rig uhg!
